Yes, they are showing both types. This bullet type translucent tip plus the original worthless grey flex sleeves. I have a call into Westone C/S to ask about them and where/when we can get them. Will advise when they call me back.

post #3411 of 409110/23/12 at 8:03pmHello folks, so I picked up a set of W4s for $220 from inmotion stores last week. I am currently using them powered from a FIIO E6 amp with the music coming from an ipod nano 6th gen through LOD.
Can you guys recommend a better amp (if necessary)? looking for something portable if possible, I figured I'd ask you guys, since you guys are the experts on W4s.
So far, these make my custom UE4 PRO sound just awful and lacking in bass. I'm glad that these sound fantastic, but sad that they make a joke of my UE4 pros... not really sure how to feel about that
Thanks for any advice/help!post #3412 of 409110/23/12 at 10:18pmthe impedance on the westone 4`s is only 32 ohms so it doesn`t really need an amp. however it does scale up quite well using one. i recommend the jaben govibe mini box 2012 edition which is smaller than the e6, has great reviews and 50 hour battery life. it also costs around $50 so its pretty affordable, how did you get the westone 4`s for $220?

Thanks for any advice/help!Wow, $220 is a steal! Sorry about your UE4Pro. When I heard the demo UE4Pro at CanJam 2009 I thought the demos sounded more like a Westone UM3X so they didn't suck, but they were using Complys tips on the demos which should make them sound a bit different than the full custom. Either way, the W4 are warmer, more full bodied and spacious, and more refined sounding than my UM3X, and I still like the UM3X a lot too (as long as I don't switch to the UM3X after getting used to listening to the W4 for a while.)
I was so impressed with the W4R out of my balanced SR-71b with TWag V2 cable at RMAF 2012 that I forgot I was listening to a universal fit IEM for a moment. I liked them enough that I just received a set of W4R today, and I'm passing my original W4 down to my son.

The Inmotion Entertainment stores (located in airports) had them on clearance. Some people got them as low as $200 I believe, mine were priced at $220 at LAX.
Thanks for the recommendation, I'll def check that one out! From what I've read, most IEMs dont require an amp to be driven, they are mainly used to EQ or boost a specific range, am I correct? The reason I use the E6 is to add a bit of bass, but not so much that it makes it muddy and distorted, after all, I dont want to end up with a headache from the bass.Quote:Originally Posted by HeadphoneAddict

At that price, I couldn't pass them up! Not that the UE4 Pro sound bad, but these Westones just blow them out of the water, in my opinion. The soundstage is amazing in these! The quick (but controlled) bass matches perfectly with my music I think (hip-hop, R&B, oldies, etc.) and hardly leaves me wanting more bass; I'm amazed at how long I can listen to these without fatigue, that above anything else, is what has me hooked on these at the moment.
From what I understand, the only difference from the W4 to the W4R is the removable cable, right? Or is there a difference with the sound?post #3415 of 409110/24/12 at 12:39am- Doc-holliday

I have an e6 lying around here. I just compared it to my e11 the other day with the bass boost for someone who was asking on here about using one. I found one of the bass settings to sound similar to the e11 but MUCH looser for some reason. The other settings I didn't like too much so didn't bother with them.
Honestly I use my W4's with my rockboxed clip zip with bass setting to +3db. It is surreal to me how well that little bitty thing drives headphones and IEMs.post #3416 of 409110/24/12 at 5:52amW4 may not "need" an amp but I think it improves it much more relative to using an amp with other IEM's.
I am using an Ibasso T3 analog version which is said to be a very neutral amp not affecting the original sound of the IEM. It is very portable and I think it does quite well for the $100 cost.
Headphone Addict: "more full-bodied and spacious" exactly sums it up. When I play around with EQ I can "sort of" get my JH5 to sound very similar but no matter what, the W4 is more full-bodied and spacious.

I like my w4r unamped
my amp is arrow 4G. it makes w4r sound more thick and a little warmer (according to what I remember) but I want my w4r sound leaner and colder
so I use it directly with my 3rd gen itouch

Quote:No, I think the Arrow is Headstage (aka Penguin Amp), not RSA.
