hi guys this is my first post here, let me start by saying hello, my name is sean (obviously), im new to the high end audio field but it all interests me.  Im looking to get a DAC to run from my pc to my aktimate mini speakers and have seen a lot of things i like in audio gd products.  However i cant seem to tell if there is a significant difference between the FUN and NFB-12.  The NFB-12 seems to be a less expensive (by $145) option for similar or the same sound quality? it seems the FUN is the same thing except it has an added OP amp and an extra set of outputs.  Which should i probably go with? is the FUN more for modders? or will i regret going with the NFB-12? thanks ahead of time for your responses!

Hi and welcome to Head-Fi! (sorry about your wallet) :)

The gears designer (Kingwa) has said the NFB-12 is on the same level as the FUN sound quality wise. It´s better value right now, as it is sold with a promo price. The advantage with FUN is that it can be modded more (you can switch opamps and digital receivers), while the NFB-12 is a fixed system. On paper the NFB-12 has two of the high end Wolfson chips (8741) while the NFB-12 has two. If you don´t need the added connections and aren´t planning on tweaking the sound by changing the modular components in the FUN, I´d recommend going for the NFB one. It´s amazing value at only 200 dollars.

im really leaning towards the 12 now thanks! is there a significance of having dual WM chips in the 12 over the single in the FUN? and is there a real big difference by changing out OP amps etc... I'm most likely just going to leave it as is. thanks again!

As to swapping out the opa, the one nice thing about that is being able to put an HDAM in it if you want...  much better sound than an opa chip.

The one thing that confuses me about the NFW-12 is that it doesn't have an opa at all...  I'm guessing that they built an HDAM into one of the output stages, but the english on the site is a little hard to understand.

Anyways, you might not see yourself swapping chips out right now, but that could change after a couple years of doing this stuff =]  I started out with an altoids tin amp and ended up with a rather large stack of equipment...  and have my (HDAM'ed Zero) DAC and an old amp opened up as I fix/upgrade stuff in them :)

If you don´t intend to tweak the sound with different receiver modules, op-amps and so on and want something that just cleanly works... Definately go for the NFB-12. It´s cheaper, smaller and has dual Wolfson chips.
