Magnepan MMG- Will Harman Kardon AVR525 HT Receiver Drive These??? - Page 2

Update: my original plan was to try the Maggies with the HK receiver first & then get a dedicated amp right away only if necessary. However, in searching the local Craigslist classifieds, I found an Adcom GFA-545 II for cheap...REALLY cheap: $20!! I took a chance on a "non working" amp & as it turns out, it only needed replacement of a few internal fuses (cost of $3) & now it sounds as good as new (at least what I imagine it must have sounded like new). The MMGs come in Friday. Just out of curiosity, I think I'll try a comparison between
the HK 525 & the Adcom for amping. Will share the results once I do.

Grats on finding that amp !  I think we all still want to know how the reciever does driving your speakers.  Please A/B the two once you get your speakers.  Would love to see the mounted speakers in action in a picture as well.

Have fun.

Thanks Bones, for the kind words.  I'll definitely A/B the amps- though I should warn that it will probably take some time to get my system setup again.  A little mishap with an upstairs toilet has resulted in water leaking through to the downstairs den/listening room eek.gif.  My equipment (along with everything else) had to be moved to another room for now & so nothing's plugged in...

Incidentally, I saw your earlier post regarding MMG placement & dampening materials- yep, to start, I'm planning on placing them about 2-3 feet from the back wall & about 5 feet apart.  My main listening position will be approximately 9 feet from the speakers.  I read somewhere that the Maggies benefit more from "diffusive" material placed behind them, as opposed to "absorptive" material.  For someone in my budgetary situation, I suppose that means houseplants rather than pillows wink.gif.  I've also read that sidewall proximity/reflections are less of an issue with the Maggies...but, I guess I'll find out soon enough.

Hey, that's awesome!  I wish I was so lucky...  I heard about someone picking up a GFA-555 that way too.

Still waiting on the MMGs...meanwhile I've been trying to find a decent interconnect to link the HK 525 & the Adcom 545.  Basically, looking for something that will do justice to the gear I currently have & not be the weak link.  Don't have much experience with higher-end ICs (I know some people think that fancy ICs are in the realm of snake oil), but I've used Blue Jean Cable LC-1 in my headphone rig & they seem fine (though I've not compared them to anything else).  My budget for the IC is $100 max & I'm inclined to buy something used if possible.  My best guess, so far, of an IC that would work well is the Kimber Kable Timbre, which can be found for ~$100 or less on audiogon/ebay.  You guys have any thoughts?

FYI- I started another thread on this topic: http://www.head-fi.org/forum/thread/537367/interconnect-rca-needed-for-hk-avr-525-adcom-gfa-545-magnepan-mmg-system-recommendations-please#post_7258396
