Why would there be a silver and black pad on amazon, but 2 blacks from buyauthorized?

He's not saying he "opened" anything up, he just simply took off the earpad to take a visual look at the driver.

After all, Ultrasone specifically made those pads to be easily removed and replaced if needed. They even come with two colors of pads, so the user can "experiment" on which pad visually looks better. All of which involves taking the earpad off, and getting a glimpse of the driver. As long as no tools were used...

It's a very well written email. But it's up to you if you find it okay with sending an unhonest letter.

Hmm... mine came with two pairs of black pads.

So did mine. We both got ours from BuyAuthorized on eBay. Leander bought his from Amazon. Thus he has a silver and a black pair.

BuyAuthorized sells "open box" PRO 900s. Amazon (and most dealers), sell them brand new from factory -- which comes standard with silver and black pads. But, the word got around that BuyAuthorized sells the PRO 900 for much cheaper than every other dealer for a "open box" item, but when in fact, it's pretty much brand sparkling new -- it just comes with two black instead of the one silver one black standard.

Ultrasone is making everything black, grey and silver.

Pro 550 and 750 got updated to black, grey and silver.

Pro 750 now has black pads.

HFI 2200 was replaced with a black, silver and grey  HFI 2400.

All the pads are now black.

Newest versions of the Pro 900 might just be getting 2 sets of black pads now instead of 1 silver...but that's just a guess.

Hey Guys~

I have owned this pro 900 for like 2 weeks. As it has been burned in, its sound gets better and better to me. Anyway, I've got one question though. At the moment, I'm using Cowon J3 and Fiio E7 as a DAP and portable amp.

Do you guys think fiio E7 is one of good choices to fully appreciate pro900, or do I have better options(among portable and below $150 amp/dac)?

The amp/dac would be nice if it is super-portable just like fiio e7.

Thanks in advance!beyersmile.png

I've been disappointed with the midrange for a while so I thought perhaps I should undo the kees mod, so while I was unscrewing the shield, one of the screws slid across the shield and landed on the driver as it was attracted by it's magnet. I got the screw out but it let a small dent on the driver. Since, I kees modded them, I think I voided the warranty, is that true or is there anything I can do to claim warranty. They still sound fine, I think, I haven't listened a lot to them since, cause I've been really sad about it... frown.gif

I could try to remove the mod, but it would probably leave marks and they'll be able to tell or not?

Edit: I mean I could tell them I noticed driver imperfections and just not tell them what happened. Cause it could very well be a manufacturing error.

Believe it or not but if you suck in a blow out with your mouth pressed and sealed on the driver, it can fix the dent in the driver.  I have done it before when I had a similar problem with another can.

I use the e7 currently for my portable combo.  It sounds great!  Also, FiiO is coming out with the E11 next month.  It will be a portable true amp rather than the e7, which is first and foremost a DAC.

How do headphones get classified as open box, does it mean used? or what happened exactly for them not be to considered new?

Also how could they have 2 black pads, when stock comes with 1 black and 1 silver?

Open box means the box was opened. It's exactly what you think it means. Sometimes the items have been used for a bit - say, twenty minutes or so - before the buyer decides to send it back, or perhaps the wrong product was delivered, or a surplus was received. Open-box, or refurbished items, as they're alternatively called, are different from used in that they are usually in like-new condition. My laptop is a refurb I bought off of Ebay, and the only sign of it being a refurb is the sticker on the bottom (which identifies it as B-stock).

As for the pad differences, there are often little deviations with a product where the company might make small changes such as using different cables, changing the strain reliefs, removing/adding spare parts and so on. I wouldn't think much of the different earpads. In fact, it's pretty generous of Ultrasone to give us spares.

Oh okay.

Though I've read the silver pads are gentler?

Thanks for your quick reply.

What about portable amp/dac like iBasso D2 + BOA or iBasso D4Mamba? Would there be significant improvement in SQ compared to fiio e7 or just marginal improvement? Although I can tell the definite SQ improvement when using Fiio E7 with pro 900.

I've never heard the E7 so I can't comment on its sound quality, but both it and the D4 are great DACs.  I'm pretty positive the the amp section of the D4 outputs more power than that of the E7, however, which could have a positive impact on sound quality.

I was under the impression of the product being purely used as an amp.  I have used the T3D with the 900s and I find that the E7 has more output power.  I am not a true believe in the difference of sound quality based purely on the amp, aside from tubes.  Although, output power can surely have an effect.  As far as DACs go, I cannot comment in depth.  It is widely known that the DAC in the E7 is good quality.

I am using E7/E9 combo with 900. I can go full volume (60) using just E7 and it gets pretty loud but still listenable (meaning the phones and my ears can go louder albeit for a brief time). E7 does make a difference in SQ with my Mac Pro which has a pretty crappy  sound card. Everything's clearer and tighter. Not a hint of hissing or static noise, while playing or stopped. When E9's added bass tightens up and hits a bit harder as well. I can't imagine going full volume with E9.

Quick question....has anyone tried removing the PRO lettering from the top of the headband? I absolutely hate it and I want to get it off without damaging the headband.

Thanks for your comments, Jibbie, Coupe and Dougeefresh!

In fact, I'm quite satisfied with my E7. I was just wondering whether it is a good idea to "upgrade" to a bit more expensive and possibly better amp/dac like ibasso D4,  even though volume-wise, I've never had problem even with Cowon J3 and Fiio E7.  Given the same level of volume, if the SQ improvement between D4 and Fiio E7 is just marginal, then I would definitely not go for any other amp/dac. :) I'm afraid once I get into the world of "decent amps/dacs", there would be Money problem but also relationship problem! My gf uttered "No more headphones...."very_evil_smiley.gif.....
