BTW what is the power out of the headphone amp, I can't find any detail on it.

This all that John Westlake has provided:

"The Headphone outputs are the same quality as the Main outputs.

THD 0.0015%

SNR-A 117dB

Output impedance less then 1 Ohm

Output current limited to +/- 120mA (Before current limit starts to kickin)"

and this:

"The MDAC has a unique output stage design "CROSS" that provides an inherently low output impedance (it does not rely on overall globe feedback to reduce output stage impedance and distortion) - this makes the CROSS output stage ideal to drive "difficult" loads such as headphones.

The CROSS output stage topology gives you finesse and control over brute force..."

That doesn't really answer the question of output power though. All I can say is I don't find it lacking with the LCD-2's, when I switch to headphone amp in the Pioneer SX-650 it might feel a little more effortless but it's not a dramatic difference. Given how good it sounds with LCD-2's I don't find the difference to be an issue.

I may have a pair HD650's on loan for a few days soon which will give me the chance to see how the M-DAC fares with a higher impedance load.

Thanks for the info.  I'm going to sit back and stop worrying for a bit, just listen and see how I get on. Anyway its my birthday in a couple of months... ;)

Let us now how you find it with the 650s

What volume setting do you find yourself using? On my Grado 325s its somewhere around -30dB.  I borrowed a pair of T1 and they don't come anywhere near alive until -10dBbasshead.gif

I just picked up an M-dac about two weeks ago to use with my relatively new headphone setup. Will be looking forward to trying it straight to my LCD-3s versus through a Headroom BUDA then to the LCD-3s. Haha, this is my first venture into head-fi or desk-fi so really interested

Hey,

I know ideally DACs should be left powered up to get the best sound but barring that, anyone have a rough feeling on

the Mdac's warm up time ...1hr? 2hrs? Certainly freshly turned on, the sound is pretty forward. i left it on standby for 24 hrs this

week to test it and for sure it was way smoother.

I've had the HD650's as well as a pair of RS-1's here for the past few days. The 650's fare similar to the LCD-2's, although the difference might be a bit more pronounced, they sound good out of the M-DAC's own headphone output but seem a bit quicker, more effortless with the Pioneer SX-650. On the other hand I prefer the RS-1's straight out of the M-DAC, they become a bit too bassy out of the Pioneer.

As to volume, I'm listening to the RS-1's right now at -38 db but have had them up into the mid -20's with some recordings. The LCD-2's typically anywhere from mid -20's up to -10'ish. Generally the volume would be at the lower end of those scales. The HD650's seem to require a bit higher volume on the M-DAC and the opposite is true on the Pioneer.

Any changes I've noticed have been fairly subtle and I said it settles in within about 20 minutes but don't hold me to that as I've never formally sat down to test it, that's just more of an impression.

I may take it off your hands--provided you offer it at a good price--the next time I pass through Sing in July.  I'll PM you closer to the date.

Maybe I misunderstood what you meant, but that (indeed pretty funny) post isn´t talking about the MDAC. That was a reply to one of the people on that thread praising a valve CD player. MDAC PCB isn´t even red.

I just received mine yesterday. Been burning in ever since. have almost 24 hours on it so far and it sounds great to me.

Probably gonna give it another 24 hours or so until i move it to the main rig and do some listening impressions.

im just curious as to what filter you guys are using? ive been using optimal transient xd so far.

I've not really been able to tell exactly why but I keep going back to Minimum Phase when using the LCD-2's. To be honest though, I haven't really sat down and tried to hear differences between the different filters.

thought id post some pics up for you guys.

Sorry for the mess, this is in my workshop for break-in, will be moved to my main rig tomorrow.

The display looks dim in a couple pics, due to camera flash. sorry.

those are my new D2k's breaking in along with it. hopefully gonna get started on the Mark L Mod for them today (my old pair had a driver fail on me).

enjoy.
