First Portable Audio Setup. What should I expect with the gear I've purchased?

First up, sup everyone. This'll be my first post on the Fi Forums so be nice ; )

Been plowing through heaps of info in regards to portable Audio setup. I've had a pair of AKG's 240 MKII for about a year now, Used it in combination with my iPod touch till a few months back when I got an iPhone, 4 specifically. & go practically everywhere with e'm. I've only just discovered recently via these forums that this is kind-of fopar to do with most pairs of AKG's. Anyway. I was wondering how I could improve my sound with my AKG's through my ipod.

A few days ago I thought, that I should just find a way to play the AKG's thought the iphone's connecter dock instead of through the audio jack, & then I came across the Head-Fi site & forums & was just blown away with, well everything. I found out about portable Audio setups with portable amps & LOD's. So with that, this is where I'm at.

Since the Aussie dollar is going steady with the US lately, I jumped on Amazon and bought a new pair of AKG's, the K271's MKII, because they where so cheap & I've always just wanted them. Then I read that nothing ''portable'' amp wise, is really going to power the K271's very well. Though one guy suggested that, if one had to, the P3-DIY Headphone Amplifier (IBASSO P3+) were your best bet to power the 271's, So i ordered one from eBay.

Next thing I found out is that not just any LOD will work on the iPhone 4 for the connection, again I came across the Fiio L3 LOD "PCOCC-A" Cable which, depending where you read, stats that it works with iPhone 4. So I also ordered a pair from eBay.

Also ended up getting a "Sweetcome OFC Headphone cable for AKG K271's 2.5m 1/4" off eBay reading up that they too could produce better sound & are generally tough for portable use.

One last thing I ended up purchasing was the GO-DAP/SilverBlack - for iPhone 3GS/3G. For my iPod Touch as a second portable solution. Just incase everything I bought beforehand didn't work together for some reason.

So after that long introduction & explanation on all that which I have acquired, I'd like to know if the components chosen here are really going to work out together, & or have some advice or recommendations for me. For better or worse, everything is going to have to work around the Pair of AKG's I've bought & the fact that I'm going to go Portable with them in some form or another. Tell me I'm Crazy, I don't know. But they are the audio Cans I've been going with for a while now & I'll be stubborn to change otherwise.

Cheers.

Right. I don't think I want to pull my iPod out of the bag every time I want to change song. Maybe an old classic 80gig. atm my funds are a little low, but that's something to consider...

There is an extensive thread in 'Portable Amps' titled 'Leaving Portable Audio - its just too silly', and I still agree with a lot of what the author had to say  when he wrote it. I believe that the main problem is expectation - we want something we can slide into a small bag (and I do mean small..) but which will somehow give us sound on par with expensive full size audio kit : while DAPS, DACs and amps have definitely improved since that post was thrown together, expectation and reality will still be miles apart for many of us. I don't go down to my local auto dealer and expect to drive out in a Ferrari for the price (and ergonomics ..) of a Fiat, regardless of the badges on the side and the improvements over the previous model. That said, I wouldnt take a Ferrari to the shops, and I wouldnt try to carry a large tube amp through airport security - horses for courses :)

Wow. Good article. You can put me well inside those first few paragraphs, I suppose my reasons for a portable "rig" are just like most other newcomers, yet knowing more about it all I'm still happy with the way I've decided to go. Got my new AKG's today & the GO-DAP, on charge. So I'll soon hear if the sound compares at all.... Cheers for the heads-up on that page too.

Understanding will always lead to better enjoyment, that should go for most things in life. Knowing now that my rig's only gonna sound marginally better, well. Least I know. : )
