Chess Giants (Windows XP game)

For a while I ran Windows 7 equipped with the excellent Chess Titans. Now back on XP I miss that game but after some digging around I found this very handsome clone. The programmer asks €10 for download and IMO well worth it. He states that a future release will be capable of letting players compete online. Also, he is pretty fast with e-mail replies and takes interest in for example my suggestion to include a minimize button when in full-screen mode.

Just thought I'd let you know :)

Ye, I was thinking something like that. Some Head-Fi competition. Well, like I said, we will have to wait until the online part is implemented in a new version. Meanwhile I will practice a bit. I love chess but am just above an absolute beginner. I will send you a PM by the time the game is ready. Will/Did you get this game?

I like chess but cant see how this does anything different than many other free chess games.

Imo I cant see why its worth paying for?

You're absolutely right. Normally I would settle for freeware myself but wasn't satisfied with what I had found up to that point. For a tenner I was happy to make the deal and start making moves smile.gif Did you find any good looking chess games for free?

I've recently started playing Chess Titans on Windows 7, and I think it's great fun for my level (rank amateur who hasn't played since school). In fact I've quickly become addicted to it.

Real chess experts sneer at Titans, and true it does occasionally give away a piece for no good reason, but I count that as a blessing when I'm in trouble.

I'm also planning to upgrade to a program that can run on my non-Windows7 PCs, and the one I'm gowing for is the well established Chessmaster, which is very often recommended for players of all levels. I can get the slightly older version (10th Edition) for about £5 online, which is peanuts really.

Anyone know how Master compares with Giants?

No, I must admit none I have played look as good as those screenshots.

Tbh, I mostly play "FreeChess" on my IPod Touch.

Well, here is a review of Master and what I see is that it has a bunch of extras that Giants doesn't. The only thing that Giants has in favor is the feature to make the AI resign and make mistakes. There's a slider to adjust both as you like so that adds a touch of humanity to the AI. Quite sure they are both fine games but all the bells and whistles in Master is not something I chose for. There are demo downloads available so you can get to know them a bit better.

mories why settle with that when you can just get one of the chessmaster titles... I don´t know if 10 is the latest? If it´s to expensive you can get the 9 for virtually no money at all.

Aah, decisions decisions. I guess he (the programmer) had me at the first line: Ever wanted to play Chess Titans on Windows XP? smile.gif

Well, I've now tried the Chessmaster 10 trial - and this is the one for me because of the myriad of coaching and training options - something I strongly need. The latest version is XI Grandmaster, but reviewers have said it's minimal extra features over 10 are not worth upgrading for. And 10 already has so many features it's hard to know where to start. So I'll get the v10 DVD when it next appears at nice price on Amazon.

But I wouldn't argue with anyone who goes for Giants. It looks a BIG improvement over Titans and the programmer seems to be very active in ongoing improvements. So moriez, I agree it perfectly answers your opening line.
