Looking to replace my iRiver H140 with a <$300 mp3 player

*** I only have 2 concerns with the Mp3 player: Sound quality, and folder navigation. I don't care about bulk, size, weight, touchscreen or not****

After 7-8 years of loyal service time has come to replace my iRiver. I will retire the iRiver to my sunroom where it will play tunes, hopefully, for many more years to come but unfortunately just doesn't cut it as a portable player now due to its pitiful battery life.

Current headphones:

  • Ultimate Ears Triple Fi.10
  • Sennheiser CX380

Will be purchasing either NuForce 7E-M or HeadDirect RE-0 as every day use/backup to the UE Triple Fi.10  (need a <$100 backup for the ultimate ears. It's not every day I can buy a $300+ set of earphones.

Looking for:

  • Within this Budget: $200 (can stretch to $250 max)
  • 16GB or greater
  • Superior Audio Quality

  • IT IS A MUST to be able to navigate the songs like you would navigate files in windows explorer. I hate how Zune, iPod, Creative Zen archive your songs based on ID3 tags, and not allot them folders nor sort them by file name. I have too many international songs ripped without proper tags and it will be a nightmare to allocate them the right song names and artists.
  • is within a $250 price tag.

Thank you.

Get a replacement battery of ebay and diy?  Could also look at replacing the original hd whilst your at it with either another harddrive or compact flash mod.

Cheers.

So what you're saying is that it sounds superior to every <$300 mp3 player currently out there? Thanks!

From what you've said, it sounds like the HM-601 w/RE0 is perfect for you. Both are available for $260. When researching the player, also check out reviews of the HM-602. The only difference is the HM-602 includes an external DAC feature. Keep in mind that this player has a very musical sound signature.

If your looking for something more neutral, you should probably check out the S:Flo 2. It is a great player, though a little colder in sound signature. The 16 GB version is available for $175. (Let me know if you are looking for a used S:Flo 2).

It's actually a RE-Zero but maybe you can ask Head Direct to see if they can switch to a RE0 or not. The 601 would be something to consider if you can handle using SDHC cards since internal memory is 2GB.

That sounds and looks like the perfect deal HM-601 with the RE-Zero headphones (are they different than the RE0?) OK nm I just answered my own question one is by HiFiMan the other by Headdirect. If they can accomodate the switch, and hopefully they will since the exchange works in their favor opting for the less expensive earphones....

Thanks again guys.

1 more thing tho, can u navigate the songs as directories? I keep all my songs sorted by folders and that is really important.

I really don't mind the 2GB memory, I can just rock a 32GB SDHC....thanks again. HM-601 ftw.

I would have just suggested buying a CF adapter and new battery for the iriver, then getting one of the ibasso dac/amps with optical input. I have an iriver iHP132CF and with a cameron sino battery this thing outlasts anything I connect it to and anything apart from my ipad that I have ever owned. I get about 40hrs at least, never timed it, but suffice to say I never worry about battery no matter what I am doing, I can leave the house for a day out with literally no battery left and make it through the day.

The main difference between the two is the Re-Zero requires and adaptor (included). I would read this review comparing the two:

Leckerton also makes a dac/amp with optical.
I have one on the way and also have purchased a modded H140 from a head-fi seller.
Would be nice if someone came out with a new player with optical out.
