I have a number of Bose products. The first was a Bose Wave Radio/CD I received as a very rare "attaboy" from the company I'm with. That was about 15-18 years ago and it's still going strong and sounds fine. Also have Bose speakers with my telvision setup and some Bose non-noise canceling headphones. They all sound very nice to my old ears and I've no complaints, especially in terms of the build quality.

I didn't think of TEAC when I began searching for a dedicated CD player. My initial short list included Denon, Cambridge, Marantz, Onkyo. The Teac intrigued me, so I went for it. It is very...

Beats out the Bose Triport, the HD 202 and HD 435s, the AT M35 and AT M50. Just try it and see. Extremely comfortable (I wear mine while commuting and studying, for about 5+ hours a day). Bought...

for even crazier marketing check out beats by dr dre and the new HP envy laptop that "makes the music sound like the studio recording!! "
Women buy it. They cba to waste hours poring over 200 product reviews. They just want something to do a job and isn't embarassing to own.
Bose gear is readily available, looks a bit more stylish than standard boys boxes and is reassuringly expensive. Just like their new handbag.
They keep buying it because it doesn't break down.
It's a good business model if you can get there. Charge a big premium for a slightly better product which leaves money for pre and post sales support and a healthy extra wedge of profit.

They make the world quiet. I have seen people use broken skullcandies without the flanges on... No seal or isolation doesn't bother them a bit, they know no better. The they put on some Bose headphones, actually hear the music (albeit colored and muddy) and say 'wow, this is the only thing I have heard this good, and since it costs more than any other I have seen, I'll be able to brag about ti being the 'best'" They simply don't have perspective, and don't care to try alternatives. When I see a friend with a new set of cans I haven't listened to, I ask for a listen. The average person doesn't really care or acknowledge the difference between headphones, much less that an $30 PortaPro can sound better than a $300 Bose. Price = Performance seems to be the logic.

Marketing and accessibility.
How many audio-related companies do TV and radio ads? Except for Bose, virtually none. Certainly name recognition comes into play. Don't forget Bose also put their "premium" car speakers into luxury cars; in turn these car manufacturers trumpet their "Bose audio" systems and consumers equate Bose with hi-end audio.
Bose is everywhere. They're at big-box stores like Target and they even have their own corporate stores. Where can you get Grado headphones? Sennheiser? AKG? Or even Sony MDR-V6's? Chances are you'll fine Bose headphones and earphones before any of the previously-mentioned brands. Let's face it, to vast majority of consumers, stepping inside a dedicated stereo shop is scary....and the attitude some of these retailers have aren't not exactly welcoming either.
This.
The marketing dept from Bose has done a great job getting their product out there. I know their newest earphone product is the IE2 because of their marketing. I see Bose ads on the subway and various other areas. They also have a cable that is very easily noticed and is not similar to any other cable. The black and white cable is something no other manufacturer that I know of does. They also are everywhere. Best buy, target and many other stores carry their products. People see the ads, see other people wearing them, see them at the stores and want them.
And yeah, like everyone else has said, it's marketing, like everything else.
For watches, everyone's heard of Tag, Rolex, and Breitling, but what are the odds of your average Joe knowing of even Patek, Panerai, Ball, Jaeger, IWC, or Lum-Tec?
And chocolates, everyone knows Hershey, Godiva, Ghiradeli, and such, but what about Amadei, Domori, Michel Cluizel, Valhrona, el Rey, and such?
Heck, there are even elite toe nail clippers. It usually takes some searching to find "nice" things.
I Am not much of a Bose fan but, I'd jump on the chance to get a pair of the now discontuned ACTIVE 701 towers with the "8"
active kevlar woofer, I head it once at a pawn shop and it was a pretty powerful set of speakers.
I heard some 301's and a pair of Portable Bose headphones, at Best buy and I enjoyed the sound of both, While I dont think the sound is
completely accurate, I liked it.
Therir lifestyle systems are just Meh, in my opnion. The Acoustimass that comes ith the Lifestyle V-48 cant even reproduce the bass note
of U2's greatest hit, from thier Joshua tree album. "I still havent found what I'm looking for!" which is pretty wonky for a bit of kit costing over $4000.00

I would agree that my Koss UR-40s, (which my roommate broke) sound better than any bose or beats headphone. It also beats them on comfort.
