My Dad and His Thorens 124

Seriously???

So it was on Sunday (yes 2 days ago Sunday) that my I invited my dad to go to the record store with me in Houston. It was 3 hours later than he was all of a sudden a vinyl fan and hobbyist (my dad has always seemed to be a man of 1000 hobbies). Well I leave with three albums for 25 bucks and he leaves with a whole pile. I am like dang you bought all those albums you don't even have a turntable and he replied neither do you.

So I get a call this morning from him to inform me that he bought a Thorens 124 (broken tonearm but still) and was going around looking for tonearms and cartridges today. My jaw dropped in awe that within a day he already bought a turntable. Its similar to when I bought a $25 holga camera and he goes out and buys a Hasselblad (grant it 8 months later I bought a Hasselblad of my own).

Anyway bummed out that he has a turntable before me and one I originally was looking at months ago (a vintage one in general until I read and felt vintage was not the way to go...for now). I try telling him that I research prices and investigate options and am methodical in my decisions and he should do the same. I guess he took the brute force approach. He also owns some vintage mcintosh amps that will go nicely with his setup. I don't think he knows anything about vinyl or cleaning them or etc etc. But while I sit with knowledge in my head he will be sitting listening to vinyl, haha. Irony and jealousy.

Nothing wrong with vintage, I don't know how much he paid for this Thorens 124, but I would say that table (when it is in working order) is much better than many entry level turntables.  Just do what I do, get something better or equal to my Dad's then eventually upgrade his, lol.
