As for the question, sometimes I listen to albums. But more often, I listen to Smart Playlists, or to my entire library in shuffle mode.
In regards to the flak thing...most likely cause Sweet Spot hasn't been the most avid iPod supporter in the past...and rarely acknowledges that it has any advantages at all But at least he went out and tried smartlists, lots of people say they'd never use them without ever doing so.

Much like macDEF I do the album thing sometimes as well, but my preferance goes toward smartlists. My desktop has been out of comission for over a week now, smartlists have allowed me to keep my playlists up to date, even without my desktop around.

I don't have a single playlist on my Zen. All albums.

Spoon man ALMOST had it right there ....It's not that I haven't been an iPod supporter, more like an iTUnes supporter. There was this whole thing back about a month or so ago, where I was pretty much saying how I didn't want to run iTunes on my PC because of the added baggage, processor/memory usage and mostly because I didn't have an open mind about the usefulness of smart playlists.

I've been using J.Rivers' Media Center for the past week, and it has gotten me into the idea of smart playlists and the like. So I know it's too late to take back what I said about smart playlists and music managers etc...but I promise that for now on I shall never again critique what I haven't tried.

Oh, and it's not that I don't have good things to say about the iPod, I think it's great, but I've always said I think it's too expensive for a music player, especially with its short battery life.

i would be counted as 'oldschool' too - full albums for me, though my winamp playlist... has a few one hit wonders at the top, and then all albums

albums for sure...i believe those tracks were placed in that order for a reason

I have too many cds to browse by that, so I just put all of the artists songs in order from the album and put it into a playlist on my iPod, kinda easier to listen to all three john mayer albums instead of always scrolling down...

depends on mood, but I usually use shuffle by genre (not id3 tag genre, mind you). Its like having a radio sation that plays what you like.

As for listening to an album the way the artist intended, aside for a rare few, you're hearing it the way their manager/record exec intended.

Imho, if a song can't stand on its own outside the album then it is no good.

one thing i would like to point out, on the iHP, you can select the artist, "john mayer" in your case and all his albums will show up, then you can select "select all" to listen to all his albums

WOW!!! thats amazing, so can the iPod homes... My point was that I dont like scrolling all the way to him, I just go two clicks to a playlist...burns less calories...

I use albums, I think it's more clearly organized. It's much easier for me to remember album tracks that I can remember from having used the album in a CD player than remembering playlists made a couple minutes an advance with varying artists and so forth.

Further more, I think I'd likely only use a playlist at most for a week then change it. Albums never grow old, IMO.

One CD at a time, start to finish.

Hmmm, guess I'm odd man out here.. my winamp playlist on my 'puter has every song in my collection and I just shuffle through them randomly. I like not knowing what's coming next.. plus, albums that I might have a tendency to ignore for one reason or another still get playtime.
