Asus Xonar DG with AD700

Hey, I am new to caring about sound but after lurking around for a few weeks and comparing different headphones I have decided to order the AD700. However I haven't got a soundc ard and I am not sure if onboard will be enough. I do not have enough to buy the essence and tbh I don't want to be spending that amount of money on a sound card so will the DG work well with these headphones or is there a better option. I will primarily be using these for gaming and movies, as well as occasional music. Regards Wallz

onboard will not be enough for the AD700s, they will not sound right. I have Used AD700 with onboard audio while waiting for a sound card to come so you def dont wanna use them with onboard. The Xonar DG will be enough for it.

Thanks, anyone elses opinion?

Bump but did you end up with both the Xonar DG and the AD700s?

Only use an AD700 with integrated motherboard audio if you like buzzing noises every time you move the mouse or have drive activity going...which you probably won't like at all.

The Xonar DG should be sufficient to get rid of that, plus you get Dolby Headphone. I don't think the AD700 really benefits from a dedicated headphone amp, though; it's very sensitive and easy to drive.

I use AD700s with onboard audio (ALC889), and it sounds great without any problems. It's dead silent at maximum volume regardless of what goes on inside my PC. All onboard is not made identical, so generalizations about it are pretty old school. If you have a properly implemented ALC889 or ALC898, I wouldn't recommend spending extra for a dedicated sound card to drive low impedance headphones like the AD700.

Well, the Realtek ALC889A implementation on my Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3P 2.0 is pretty dreadful regarding the analog output, though my HP 2730p has a nice, clean headphone-out. If anything, I'd expect it to be the other way around.

There remains the matter of DSP features that only tend to be found on dedicated sound cards, though...
