Looking for something to warm up the Pro-Ject USB Box DAC, suggestions?

Setup is in sig.

Compared to my old X-Fi Fatalty, I notice a more detailed sound, although sometimes it's a bit bright.  I've always liked a bright presentation, but at the same time I feel like I want a bit more of a relaxed, yet still detailed sound, that will bring out the mids more than the Pro-Ject USB DAC is providing.

I was looking at Pro-Ject's Tube Box II, but that's a bit pricey.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Hmm, let me go over your requirements again:

- you want it warm and lush in the mids, forgiving in the highs and bowel-loosening in the bass

- you want your music to flow over you like honey, caressing your medulla oblongata like a fine cognac, rather than the backstreet vodka Pro-ject have unleashed on you

- you want it cheap, leaving adequate finances for beer, the best BFYB musical enhancement of all

- finally, you want chicks to dig you as someone who knows where its at, and what to do with it when you get there

There is a very long queue for such a device, and I'm afraid you can all form up behind me  rolleyes.gif

True.

I'm very new to dedicated source components.  I'm used to using my X-Fi Fatalty > PA2v2.

THEN, I got the Matrix M-Stage, and I do believe the whole "sorry about your wallet" statement now will greatly apply to me.

I went to a place where I live called Audio Advice, mainly to check out what they had in record players, but also asked about some dedicated USB DACs, and surprisingly they had this unit.

Thought why not, I can return it if I don't like it, and I had the funds to get it, so.. why not, right?

I guess some general questions that will better help me in this thread:

1) Is the Pro-Ject USB Box DAC known for being a bright unit?

2) Is the Matrix M-Stage known for being bright? (my M-Stage is no where near as bright with my X-Fi, so..yeah.)

And, most importantly:

3) Is a preamp what I want in this situation?

From those questions, particularly #3, I think I can at least have a better idea of the direction I need to go in.

Thanks again.
