You can read Sam Tellig's review of the new Musical Fidelity X-Can V3 in The latest issue of Stereophile January 2004.

There is also a review in the December issue of 'HI-FI CHOICE' the U.K. magazine. "bold, open and lively", also "enough voltage gain to drive headphones like AKG's K1000" wired with a 6.3mm plug for the purpose.

VERDICT-overall score:87%

"yes, it's much better than the v2."
"The amplifier sounds more pristine-more resolution, more dynamic authority, with nary a hint of hum".

Woah, a headphone amp for just a little under $400 that can drive the K1000's? Is it true?

Seems like a long shot to me.

There is not a great deal on the matter.

"But the main test platform was the AKG K1000, which was wired with a 6.3mm plug for the purpose. Although there isn't enough voltage on tap to reach hazardous volume levels, there is more than enough for all practical purposes".

Take this with a grain of salt?

Some points from the review, but please, I can't talk too much about it due to copyright reasons, just buy a copy or read it at a book store The rest of the issue is pretty good too, so it's worth buying.

The X-Can V3 is derived from the Tr-Vista series, this time using a pair of ECC88 Tubes.

The sound : "The amplifier sounds more pristine - More resolution, more dynamic authority, with nary a hint of hum."

for more buy the issue

I couldn't tell you, since I don't know.

The cover is yellow with a Legacy Focus 20/20 speaker on the cover.

With the massive grade inflation going on with the vast majority of hi-fi magazines overall would you say this is a very positive review or the standard "good value" blah, blah.blah.

Being in Canada it will take a week or two to come here and "fair usage" with respect to copyright does not mean you can only quote a miniscule amount.

I fully appreciate that I must evaluate this amp with my particular setup (which I have just started today) but being new to the esoterica of headphone amps I would appreciate just a tad more which would definitely not be deemed exceeding the bounds of fair usage.

Well, I just got a Grace 901 and the K1000's. I found that my comfortable lower level of listening was at about 1 O'Clock. If I crank it up all the way up, it does not reach painful levels at all. But it is far from anemic sounding. I guess it is good insurance against hurting your hearing.

But the Grace 901 is not powerful enough to drive the K1000's to insane levels that some people like.

How'd they like the Focus? I always figured they'd hate it since I like them!

I'd love to hear your impressions when you're ready to post them.
