Grieg's 1903 recordings re-constructed

I thought this might interest a few here. Just released is a cd with re-constructions of Edvard Grieg's recordings made in Paris in 1903. Personally I've been waiting for this for three years! (I'm a fan of the pianist and study sound recording.. so this is a rare two-in-one for me).

The pieces are performed by Sigurd Slåttebrekk on the piano, and are played so that they resemble the original played by Grieg himself. There's a youtube video from the project below and a link to more info about the cd and the project.

Edit: they actually made a website for the project: http://www.chasingthebutterfly.no/

This is very cool, thanks for posting it.  Can you explain what exactly is on the CD?  For instance, it appears that there are three recordings of Op.7 -- one which is the Grieg original, one which which is the recreated version including the movements Grieg didn't record, and a third which I'm not sure about.

Ah yes. The cd (I think there are two cds), contain all the recreated recordings, all the original played by Grieg, and on the end they added a previously recorded performance of Griegs a-minor concerto that really doesn't have anything to do with the project. But it's a fantastic performance, and the only one recorded in 5.1 surround I believe... Here's the iTunes link:

That is very cool - thanks for the heads-up! I'll have to hunt down those discs.

Very interesting indeed! I wonder if Zenph could do it better....

The comparison with Zenph is interesting. From my personal perspective (and I'm biased through my involvement with these Grieg reconstructions) the Zenph recordings for all their technological innovation and financial backing still sound like highly developed piano roll recordings - in the sense that they are amazingly close to the original.. but there is still something missing. This project takes a different approach, and proposes the hypothesis that the organic computer that resides in a musical brain is capable of getting closer to the original (in an emotional and physical sense) than any software. It would be very interesting to persuade Zenph to process the Grieg recordings so that the two approaches could be compared head to head.

Now that is something I would love see and hear!
