http://www.billfitzmaurice.com/ this might be something of interest to you. I built the Tuba 30's for my sub's when i was a DJ. I had 6 of them for clubs in the Pittsburgh pa. area , all 6 driven very easily with a QSC PLX3602. Horn loaded design subs and speakers which creates efficiency. I would rattle the block outside the club, without even getting my amp to put out 75% of it's power. I also built an Auto tuba with a single 8" woofer in the enclosure and it would rattle your teeth and send a bass shiver through my entire house at half the power output from a Polk audio plate amp that put out 100w a channel.

Full range drivers and bass are incomparable. It is physically impossible for a small speaker to produce any reasonable bass. If you want bass, get a sub. If you want the full-range single driver sound, you need to give up extension -- whether that be in the high frequencies or into the lower frequencies.
Adding a sub is hard. To get a sub that can keep up with the music is difficult. Sealed or open-baffle subs are usually considered "fast" and "musical" but they also trade extension into the lower frequencies.
Hate to break it to you.
That and building a pair of speakers on top of figuring out what DIY amp to build is gonna turn your project into a solid brick of time-killing, caution-filled mess that tends to boggle the mind.
Save yourself the pain.
Nah, I need something to keep me occupied. I have no hobbies, no extracurricular activities--nothing. I need to accomplish something impressive.
The goal is not to really get the absolute best sound for $x, but to build something of my own and be satisfied with it.
I also aspire to be an engineer so I figure this would be working towards that goal, you know actually creating something.
I have a bit of cash so that won't be a problem for now but I want to be as stingy as possible while attaining better sound than a shiny 5.1 system at Best Buy, y'know?

I have a small room, I have no intention of shattering the foundation of my house, I would like just a drop of bass. But that's beside the point; I will worry about that later.
I will start looking into amps.
You should check out the Zigmahornets as well: http://www.6moons.com/audioreviews/zigmahornet/zigmahornet.html
Dave Merrill doesn't sell the drivers anymore, but "Two Bald Guys Audio" does.. as well as Diy Paradise..
Amp idea: Mighty Midget
Pete also has some options using Fostex and Jordan full range speakers. You will need access to a tablesaw, and a router will be nice. Oh, and you HAVE to have a palm sheet sander at some point.
Check out this out for a lot of fullrange designs and info http://www.planet10-hifi.com/
I'm currently building my first speakers too, with some Mark Audio CHR-70s, about $70 USD a pair I think, going to try the mMarS cabinets as a starter, then probably the frugel horn mk3 with them to when they are finalised.
You may want to check out the Pioneer B20 speaker. Go to:

PartsExpress has the driver currently on sale.

I've got them a 0.75 cu ft sealed box and like them. Far from the best drivers, lacking detail and air, but for the price and simplicity they are hard to beat and should keep you well within your budget.
