v6 vs. HD580

i don't want to hear anything about price, i don't want 30 responces of just "they are so different" could you guys just compare the two? don't talk about any other phones, talk only of sound quality, not comfort, not anything but sound quality. sorry to be so specific but you guys tend to stray off track all the time :-/ thankyou very much.

v6:

great tight bass, super bright extended highs, recessed mids, no soundstage, easily powered

hd580 (if it's anything like the hd600):

bass is very present but not as tight, richer mids, decent soundstage, more polite presentation, harder to power

You want specifics. Only sound quality... get the 580.

well, even though i hear rock sounds not so good on the 580s, would rock sound better on them then on the v6's? i do have a small portion of my music of hard rock, will the 580's literally not be good with them? i don't like the v6's sound that much, it has no heart. cold heartless bastard headphones. the low end is all nice, and the rest is good...

for me to poop on!

so what will the difference be in the rock department? just wondering.

from what i have seen, i really think i will like all aspects of the 580s alot. i want the crisp, clean, big sound. i don't care if it doesn't have punch... but i would like to know, in comparison to the v6's how they will handle a hard rock song. i say in comparison, so then i may have a better idea.

and you're not considering sr-60s because...?

there is a reason why i only wanted sound quality responces i have the v6's, and im going to buy the 580's (unless there is some sort of drastic change in my veiws) and im curious about em. i know grado's are better rock phones but the really good music is the softer stuff for me. i just want to know what to expect no trust in this place...

From what I've heard, the HD600 definitely has punch enough for hard rock, when put through a powerful solid-state amp. I've no reason to expect the HD580 wouldn't be likewise.

the only amp im going to be able to afford is a portable... most likely an airheads on the sales board for like 60 bux. or whatever i can get for 60, but we aren't there yet.

580's (or 600's) are only really criticized for Rock, when in competition with Grados. The Senns are fine for Rock, though as you referenced, they don't have the bass punch of some other phones like the V6's. If that's not important to you (nor price, power requirements or isolation), there's no advantage to the V6's. I've owned them twice. They're no 580's (though they shouldn't be as closed and half the price). Now bring in Alessandro MS1's, SR125's or the great SR225's, and it's a different conversation.

Then again I don't think the V6's have no heart. It's just a dark one. Recessed midrange and grating highs. Think bulldog.

i payed a total of about 140 (canadian) for my v6's. if all goes acording to plan and i pay about 120 shipped for used 580's, then im only spending like 10-15 dollars more. and im selling the v6's for 60 shipped.... i learned the hard way i suppose, but hey, you got to make mistakes to learn

ya know... i might be able to up my amp budget by a bit if i wait till march to buy one (assuming i get the 580's in early febuary :-/) do you think i will be able to survive with the 580's out of my iriver for a month? what is the absalute cheapest, widely sold amp on the sales board that will do me fine for the 580's and possibly er6's in the future. has to be protable.

I'm not sure about your math, but hey, if it wasn't for mistakes, what would this site be?

I have, at times, listened to my mp3's from a Palm Tungsten E powering my HD 580's straight out of the headphone port with no problems at all...

Not quite as good as using an amp would have been but honestly not too far off the mark...

very surprising considering that these are hard to power headphones...

thats assuming i can get the 580's for 120 shipped to toronto from the sales board. is that a safe assumtion? i payed 140 for the v6's. 70 american from etronics, then about 50 dollars candian in tax and shipping. 120 american=156 canadian. exchange~usd*1.3

so yeah....

EDIT: should i go make another post on the amps board about my amp question? btw the question was what is the cheapest portable amp that will do the 580's justice. this has to be well under 150 though

EDIT2: i think i will

V6: tons of bass that goes deep and sounds great. Highs are troublesome and tipped up enough to cause a number of people not to like them. More forward sounding and exciting, not laid back at all.

HD580 - more neutral sounding, bass is a bit less in impact and depth than the V6 but still well done. More relaxing sound.

I like the bass on the V6 better than that of my 580. The highs though, are too bright for me. The midrange doesn't come close to the smooth, rich of that of the 580. Still a very good phone at $80 considering it can be run off almost any source and sound good.
