Tiny DIY portable amps?

Thread Starter

Yes, I'm aware of the classic Altoid tin cmoy, but I'm thinking of something even smaller. Are there any standardized DIY projects similar to the Fiio E5? In case you're not familiar it's a headphone amp about as big as two matchbooks stacked, made for mp3 players like iPod.

I had a brief look around but I'm not seeing anything like that, on this forum anyway.

There is a Korean DIY amp builder by the alias "Sijosae" who as defied the laws of how small of an amp one can make.  Here's a link for your entertainment and admiration: http://www.head-fi.org/forum/thread/483067/smallest-portable-amp/15

Is this one of your builds? Amazing if it is.  Keep up the good work with the cmoy and its varients.

I have found the power source and enclosure to be the biggest issues when building a tiny amp. So I came up with this. CMoy in a Zippo. Powered by USB.

If I'd change the power cap to 10V I could use a little adapter cable to connect it to a 9V battery. This would widen the range of op-amps that can be used. And if I had any experience with SMD i'd but a SO-8 tle2426 in it to give it more power. But I don't tongue_smile.gif

Anyway, I have the layout and I can share it if anybody wants to try.

Hello, I'm not sure if there are any projects that are designed to be super small - I don't think there are many designs with less components than the CMoy. As other people have gone here you can go down the minituraisation of the CMoy - fredfred I love that SMD design!! And the Zippo, Reintz wow!! Clean... I wish I knew how to put this into paragraphs... Tom
