Speaker Suggestions (£350 Budget)

Thread Starter

Hello all,

I am looking to purchase a new pair of speakers, either Bookshelves or Floorstanders, for my Technics-SE-CA10 amplifier. My budget is £350, so I am looking for the best sound signature I can get in the price. I'm looking for recommendations on brands, and specific models. I am looking for clarity, with a spacious and tight low end. I am aware I may not be able to find anything that fits my description in my budget, but suggestions for the closest possible would be appreciated.

The specifications for my amplifier (Technics SE-CA10) are below:

Any help would be appreciated, as I have next to no experience with Home Speakers, and have never bought a pair myself. (The speakers I am currently using are Eltax Pro Monitor III's)

If any more information is needed, and I'll do my best with the knowledge I have smily_headphones1.gif

Many thanks in advance,

Amar

really the best thing to do is go listen to whatevers available in your local area

Knowing that it is going completely against mark's suggestion which is a good one, how are you with going used? The used speaker market around £300-400 is pretty crazy, I got my MA GS10's (RRP £900) for not much more than your budget.

Otherwise get yourself to your local hi-fi shop that do demo's and get haggling, you might be able to take your amp along to some good places. Any good shops locally?

oh i didnt mean you can only buy whats available localy, i meant go listen to stuff and find out what brands you like the sound of more, get a feel for how different makes sound and try to work out what sorts of things are to your tastes.

then think about buying stuff

Pretty useless spec on your amp IMO. No full range, no <0.5% THD figure, no both channels driven. Just 1kh. From Pro-Logic mode, real amp power is probably in the region of <40W all channels driven. So you're looking for very easy to drive, high sensitivity speakers.

It does however, tell you enough about the amp to know that it's worth bearing in mind speakers in the £350 range will benefit from a proper stereo amp rather than one that's part of a surround sound hi-fi system. Do you plan on branching it out into a full surround setup? In you budget i'd go bookshelf anyway, B&W, Monitor Audio, Quad, Dali and Mordaunt Short all do very good speakers in your price bracket if you want some names to look up.

Mordaunt short is certainly not very good IMHO (my home made speakers /micro-hifi combination sounded about as good as the mezzo 1 and aviano 6). I think that B&W is a bit overpriced, the monitor audio rx1's are very good for bookshelves, you might want to look for some used rx1's.

If you want something 'mature' sounding you must to take a look at the Elac fs 67's or the fs 67.2's. They might be a bit too expensive but they are superb IMO. They are very relaxed with just enough sparkle. Moreover, they have a really good soundstage and go rather deep into the lower frequencies. I found them better than the Monitor Audio rx6's!

cheeky 6ohm rating to show a larger number and at a lower THD too. i'm guessing it's closer to a 30w at most at 8ohm for comparison purposes

you're likely looking for an efficient speaker 89db+ so that you dont stress the amp since it doesnt produce much and you dont want to use it to the limit

cant go wrong with entry level mission, monitor audio bronze, wharferdale daimond 9.1 or the newer 10.1  if you're looking for new

whaferdale has a 6ohm load but is not very sensitive at 86 so i dont think it'll sound that great on that amp

i think the monitor audio BX2 will be your best bet. efficient at 90db

elac fs 67 has 6 ohm impendence. You have got to ask yourselve what you want to buy. When I went 'speaker hunting' I was looking at the bx2's, it turned out that 350euro/pair speakers just didn't have the sound quality I would want from a hifi-system. These elacs really are a LOT better, you shouldn't buy cheap speakers because you don't have enough money for the speakers that have the quality that you want IMO. So you better go and listen to some speakers:D.
