$1500 Budget: MMG Speaker Setup?

Thread Starter

So I'm in need of a good speaker system and I'd also been looking at the LCD2. However, it appears that speakers take priority at the moment and I'm relatively happy with my current headphone setup so I can wait on the LCD2s for a while.

I'd really appreciate some suggestions on a good sub and amp as I'm completely new to speakers. It would be a big plus if it could possibly take a laptop or DAP input as that would be very handy at college.

I'm considering getting a used or new MMG or 1.6/1.7 speaker system and corresponding components. Any other suggestions would be more than welcome.

Anyway, I'm a self proclaimed mid-holic so they need to be natural and organic. I also love well defined, textured bass but I don't really care for sparkly highs such as the SA5000s and K701s which makes it seem like the LCD2 would be the perfect can for me so something along those lines would be great.

Oh and these will mainly be used in my dorm until I can pick up an apartment next year and my home during the summer.

I like the Outlaw 2150 and the Outlaw sub with the Maggie MMG. You can get the MMG new from the manufacturer for 600.00 and The Outlaws is 700 new and hardle ever come up used. The MMG run about 400.00 used but the new ones give you a trade up credit should you decide to upgrade in two years. The Outlaw sub is 400.00 plus shipping. All outlaw stuff has a 30 day return on it. So if you went new for thespeakers sub and amp your talking 1700.00

How big is your dorm room? Dipoles need a bit of room to breathe. I'm not sure what the requirements are for Maggies, but the Orions call for placement four feet from the rear wall and two or more feet from side walls. The Quads seem to like a bit of room, as well. Can you pull that off in your current place?

Though I've run ribbons from fairly cramped quarters and - while not ideal - I was able to enjoy them.

If you're willing to go used, I'd pick up the 1.6QR for around $1,000. One of the best deals going. Look for a quality solid state amp. I picked up a couple of Adcom GFA-2535s and they're pretty good for $200-$300. I'd also comb through solid state amps at Audiogon with a $600 limit - most sellers will deal a bit on prices. You'd do well to look for plenty of power.

This thread is relevant to mah interests.

Next year, I'm moving into a three bedroom townhouse and likely getting some MMGs, so I'll be interested in following this thread.

From what I have read, the MMGs may be more ideal than the 1.6s for smaller spaces. Both, however, are spectacular bargains.

If you get dipoles like the MMGs, be prepared to play around with speaker placement a lot. They can be pretty finicky in where you put them in the room.

I'm looking forward to doing this myself, so keep us updated.

Oh, and I'm also looking for an amp. Keep your eyes out for vintage, high-output amps on audiogon and ebay.

Revo, any suggestions for vintage amps I should be hunting for?

I think I can manage that. The 'living room' in my dorm (pseudo-apartment style) is 16"9' X 10'10". I'll have to do some rearranging as the layout is terrible but it seems possible. The apartment I'm looking at for next year would be much easier placement wise.

I'll probably go used for the most part but I might buy the MMGs new as I'll probably upgrade in celebration of graduation and my first real job (knock on wood). Do you know the range for the trade up credit?

Thanks for the suggestions so far!

No disrespect to this forum or head-fi but you should check out some more speaker oriented forums, do your homework, you'll be happier in the long run.

I just started looking at speakers again to replace my Swan M200 desktop speakers. My budget is about $600 for the speakers.

In the $600 range there are A LOT of options, new, used and vintage. There are active monitors that cost that much as well.

With your budget, you have even more options and I would start separating your budget for speakers, sub and amp. Then I would consider what types of music you listen to get an idea what speaker companies (so many!) might be suitable and which are popular. You also have to take size and speaker placement into consideration along with amp/speaker 'synergy'. Don't forget stands if you're going bookshelf/monitor.

I'm overwhelmed right now with the choices at $600 so I'm going to take my time and not rush into anything.

Try looking for any amplifiers that can put out a decent amount of wattage at 4 ohms. Preferably at least 175-200W, but the more the merrier, Maggies love to be fed some serious current. A lot of people power their bigger Maggies, like the 1.6/3.6 with 400W into 4 ohm power amplifiers, like the Parasound Halo A21 (which is very expensive.) If you've got the cash, I would seriously consider a Halo A23 as well, it drives 225W into 4 ohms and there's one for $750 OBO on Audiogon right now (though maybe a deal will pop up sometime.) Parasound makes quality stuff. The A23 is $950 new.
