I'd be very interested to know. Its been tough finding any comments or reviews from anyone who may have more critical ears.

For 99€ I love it. The best thing is, that it sounds very good. Googling the internet for its SQ brought that the lower end is a little emphasized. It is true, but just a little. Love it the most with the e-Q7.

Rockbox works fine, and plays everything. The stock music app has some problems playing FLAC files, but that is what I experienced. Maybe if some settings are changed... it would work

If you're talking about this post http://www.head-fi.org/forum/thread/523449/cowon-j3-vs-archos-32-43-internet-tablet#post_7233310

I read that as Rafa saying the 32 didn't have a slot.....maybe he could clarify for us?

You're right, sorry. I misread it.

I may take a plunge on this player, how easy or difficult is Rockbox to compile for this player and install.

Well I do not know how difficult it is to compile, since I am not an programer. I got it from dfkt from the ABI forum: http://www.anythingbutipod.com/forum/showthread.php?t=60955

It is relaively easy to install: Just put it on your Archos 32 => unplug from PC => search for it on your Archos => klick it => follow instructions on screen... ready

I own a J3, Archos 32 and 43 and 70_250

I also own the older Archos 5it and their sad 3 Vision.

I have listened thoughtfully, in an otherwise quiet room (my clothes closet),  to them all using my Sennheiser HD595s just to add to this conversation.

I listened to the same music (three seperate songs) on every device, with NO EQ settings or "Normal" chosen.  Boof, by Tony Remy.  Infatuation, by Christina Aguilera. and Chitlins con Carne, by Stevie Ray Vaughan. All were MP3s at 320kbps.

I set the volume level on each player to the same using a volume level meter with a white noise file.  The standard was at 20 (out of 40) on the J3  volume scale.

I'll skip the tedious details.  The Archos 43 stood out as the best of the Archos players. Used the stock music app. Bass frequencies were all there, and details were discernable that were not discernable on the other Archos players.

The J3 was the one that I enjoyed coming back to. Not only were the bass notes there, they were there with no distortion.  I could pick out each instrument and voice where there were muddled tones on the other players. Absolutely no pitch distortion in the highs or lows or in-between. I could hear when Christina leaned into the mic, feeling as if I was siting on her side of the wall in the recording studio.  In Chitlins you catch the echo/reverb from cymbal hits that doesn't make it to the headphones from the other players. You can almost see the walls of the room they recorded in, defined by the echo delay off the walls from every drum tap.  You pick up the "Ah ha ha" in the distance that you missed everywhere else.   Stunningly better the J3.  To my ears, that is.

How bad does the Archos 70 sound? I am looking at the Archos 70 250 GB for music/vids. I like the video capabilities, but it seems that I am going to have to make a sacrifice somewhere. Either the D3 (buggy, smaller screen, but beautiful) and good sound, the Archos 70, nice screen size, not too buggy, mediocre sound I assume, but massive storage, or the J3 small screen, not great for vids but good sound. NOTE: I  will be using custom JH13s and Rooth 8-driver IEMs so that should help with the sound.

But it ain't an amped iMod!
