AKG K1000 amp <800euro?

Hi,

I'm looking for a decent amp for my AKG K1000 (second rig, first one is powered by SPL Phonitor). So I checked out WooAudio (nice, but very expensive) and Littledot (they made some specific models for the K1000, like VI, but nobody seems to have tried them?).

So are there any recommendations anyone can give me for a <800euro, 1080$ good amp?

Thanks!

If you like tubes, you may want to try some of the PrimaLuna Prolouge Two, where you can use KT88 as the EL34, actually many more others. Used they go around your budget, but think of tubes upgrading costs first.

Another option would be used Red Wine 30.2, but the problems here are the batteries, not that they are bad, you have to be sure they are still good running or even new. I am not talking about an new version up here, but one before. If you concider to buy this one, ask the seller the serial number first and check with Vinnie about the model, cos some sellers are not honest and writing some things that never been done with the amp.

Honestly, if you can find a fully modified TrendsAudio T10.1 amp, man, try this first, cos even stock one may surprise you and safe you lots of cash to.

And the last, but not least, however never tried one, its Almarro 205

What about the Khartago Odyssey.  Should be a wonderful sonic match to the K1000s.

I was looking for 800Euro total, so if I have to import from the US, that would be more like 600-650Euro.

Also the RedWine is MUCH more expensive (unless I'm looking at the wrong one).

These amps seem really hard to get! The website's are full of information, but nowhere a simple buy button :S.

I would prefer a slightly bass heavy and warm amp.

Almarro 205, used, goes around USD 600, I believe, but like I wrote, dont know the amp to be sure.

If you want bass and warmth, get youself TrendsAudio first, you dont risk anything by getting this amp, especially used. There are other T based amps around, which maybe also good, but I didnt try them either.

There is another option, which been sugested as one of those that produce best bass possible and thats Almarro 318B, but than again, your budget have to be more flexible, thats why I would go for T amp and spare some funds for next year or something.

My vote goes to TrendsAudio T10.1, here we go http://www.audiogon.com/cgi-bin/cls.pl?intatran&1294723300&/Trends-Audio-TA-10.1-mini-clas

Good luck Victor:-)

Hmm that trendsaudio looks great. Problem is I have a balanced source, so going fully balanced with the K1000 seems very attractive with eg: http://www.littledot.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=831&sid=6baa16de316a63377d2e268d019bcd13

But the only experience I have had with littledot was the LDIVse, and it sounded the same as my NAD receiver's headphone out :D.

Is there a big difference in going balanced with the K1000?

LD looks very interesting, but I cant comment on that one either, guess you should try one. I do to have an balanced source and it can have some differences, depends on the source circuit, I think.

Hmm, tried the K1000 out of my Denon receiver, and I was blown away by the sounds. It sounds MUCH better than out of my Phonitor. So I decided to buy the Trendsaudio TA-10 from the link you gave me, hope it will arrive next week. Thanks Blackmore! I still remember the times the GS-1000 was THE headphone for you :)!

Good, you will not be disapointed, its a very nice little wonder, which I am willing to get myself one day again, I am just tube rolling addicted and all my attention goes to them right now, so, maybe next year.

I am comming from K1000, then I went the Grado direction, up to the top, except PS1000, and now back to the roots again.

Let us know about your impressions.

Take a look at 2A3 based speaker amps. That's maybe my favorite tube and it sounds amazing with the K-1000. You won't find many headphone amps running the 2A3, but you'll find a number of speaker amps with it.

Also, EL34 amps sound good. I occasionally run mine off a Conrad-Johnson MV52 that I love. It isn't as good as my Si2A3, but very musical and listenable. I think the older Conrad-Johnson amps are a bargain. Really good, but the collectors haven't driven up the prices yet.
