Anyone heard about Lyre Project? Open Hardware with Rockbox!

So what's this?

http://lyre.sourceforge.net/

It's a port of Rockbox running on this:

http://www.friendlyarm.net/products/mini2440

Why do I post this on head-fi? I've been looking for an inexpensive source to stream digital signals to an iBasso D12. As the iRiver H players are discontinued and I'm unable to find other portable inexpensive alternatives. I started to look on DIY, then I came to the idea to search for already made solutions with Arduino and here it is: LYRE PROJECT!

I don't expect the Mini2440 board to have a nice DAC, but there is all the hardware required to send from one USB port PCM digital audio to any external DAC with USB input. The board is inexpensive. I think I'm getting one. I know I won't be rocking beats to the iBasso as soon as I get it but I also want to have fun and see how hard would it be to implement such feature on the card. I'm asking the project leader first.

What do you think about it? I'm just looking for opinions. If just there existed an inexpensive player with Rockbox and SPDIF out, hehe!

Wasent there a few Iriver players a while ago that had digital out and could be Rockboxed?

Yes, past tense sadly.

So the digital out you are going to build on that card is better than the Iriver H series?

Yes why not! LOL. Actually USB is not better than SPDIF optical, but as I have read if the jitter is handled nicely when using USB to retrieve the signal, there isn't really a difference. In this case the D12 already takes care of jitter by reclocking the signal before sending it to its dual dacs.

What I wan't to do is to implement the control to send bits from the final Rockbox stream output through the usb port as if it were a PC to the iBasso D12. There should be enough opensource code to translate this kind of port, i.e. foobar2000 stuff.

The final result should be just a plus over the real fact that is to have fun doing it. Who knows... maybe someone in China already grasped the idea of the Lyre Project and would even add SPDIF output. I would buy a Teclast for example with Rockbox and digital out on the $200 mark.

Yeah, thats sounds nice. Good luck with the project, maybe you can post pictures if you get it up and runningbeerchug.gif
