HD Tracks 96/24 and USB input on DAC

I'm just ramping up on getting some quality audiophile gear, and am trying to understand the concepts before I get something that doesn't do what I want. For example, for DACs I have been looking at in the <$700 space, if I am using a laptop, or system without S/PDIF output, it seems I'm limited to a 44.1k/16 bit (or lower) data stream. That is "OK" for CD based content or CD FLAC files, but for DVD-Audio or HD Tracks 96/24 it seems I would not be getting the "full" value of my source to the DAC.

Am I correct? If so, it seems to me that the only option to get 96/24 may be something like the Hifiman HM-801 where you can get the source FLAC file directly to the DAC via SDHC media card, because neither S/PDIF or USB support that data rate (only HDMI?).

Also, I believe it has been already confirmed, but to be clear, there is no way to get full quality SACD digital source to an external DAC without a downsample via S/PDIF output since HDMI is only way to get full source quality and so far no external DAC support that transport. I was thinking of getting an inexpensive SACD player for the office to connect to a desktop DAC + AMP setup, but that seems like a non-starter.

Thanks for the input.

Welcome Walinmichi,

Back in the day many usb input DACs were limited to 16/44.1/48.  Now, 24/96 seems to be the standard.  Many DACs offer 24/96 via usb.  I have a nice collection of 24/96 albums and I listen to many of them via usb on a couple of my DACs.  Another option is a usb to spdif converter (very popular now) to connect to a non-usb DAC and again, 24/96 seems to be the standard.  You will have many options.

I stumbled on Computer Audiophile site which seems to be very focused on my exact concerns. I was thrown off by the DAC/Amp units I was looking into were only 48/16 which seems to be a limitation of USB 1.1. As you stated, there are USB 2.0 HS devices that go all the way up to 192/24. Now I need to determine what is best for my requirements. Thanks for the information.

You'll also have to make sure your software your using for playback can handle and store HiRez material.
