The first turntable I bought was a Music Hall MMF-2.1, the precursor to the 2.2, and I was not very pleased with it. The platter had a significant wobble, the tonearm felt extremely cheap (particularly the anti-skate and lack of VTA adjustment), and the speed was far from constant.
I recently bought a Technics SL-1210MK2 to replace the Music Hall, and couldn't be happier. I paid $350 for the Music Hall, and $250 for the Technics, and the build and sound quality of the Technics blows the MMF-2.1 away. The Technics has a stigma in the audiophile world due to being a DJ targeted turntable, but for the price I find it to be great. The speed stability puts the Music Hall to shame, the platter is dead flat, the adjustable feet make it easy to account for an uneven surface, and the tonearm is actually rather nice.
Don't get me wrong, the Music Hall is not a bad entry level turntable, but I can't possibly see paying anything over $150 for it again. My suggestion would be to look for a used SL-1200, and put a decent cartridge on it.
