Lets talk about hygiene!!!

I love getting clean, and I sometimes obsess over it. Here are the things I do to get the most sanitary possible:

1. I use only bar soap, preferably glycerin based. I personally like the feeling of clean dry skin. Body wash or gel always leaves me feeling oily and I end up smelling like I bathed in cologne.

2. I scrub from top to bottom with a wash rag, emphasizing and double washing the underarms, back, chest, private areas, and feet.

3. After I scrub, I use shampoo and make sure to get all areas of the scalp, including the edges. I try not to leave the shampoo in too long and i use a minimal amount. Shampoo can dry out your hair if you use too much or leave it in too long. Its the scalp most people forget about. Remember its not all about the hair.

4. Next is conditioner, I start from the tips of the hair and work my way towards the scalp. If you start from the tips, it insures your getting the important knots out.

5. I leave the conditioner in while I use facial soap to scrub my face, neck, and ears. I use the rag to get behind my ears, because the grease back there needs some abrasion to fully remove the oil.

After my shower, I use baby powder to keep myself dry and soft, especially on the armpits, feet, and privates. I always put on my socks immediatly after the powder.

Then I floss my teeth, then brush, then shave (using strokes that go with the grain).

After all this use lotion on my face to shield the acne.

Every once in a while I will stop in the middle of a shower, dry my face., chest, and back and use facial mask on them. Its best to use these masks when your skin has been steamed in a shower. It softens the blackhead, acne, cysts, etc...

Its also very nice to sleep in a clean bed with a clean pillow sheet afterwards. Otherwise you have wasted your time.

I know alot of this seems obvious and unnecessary to post about. Its just that some people do not know how to properly bathe. Its as simple as:

1. Soap

2. Water

3. Friction

That is true, but if you already have a clean bed, you should still be clean by morning.

If you take showers in the morning, that means your bed will likely be more soiled because you slept in it while your dirty. And besides, I work at 4:00 am in the morning and like my sleep and warmth. All in all, its improtant to wash your sheets and flip the bed atleast once a month regardless.

I take showers and use shampoo. I brush my teeth with tooth paste. I wash my hands with water. That's it. . . .

Quick question, how long do your showers take?

I'm also more for showering in the morning. I get really bad bed head, so showering in the morning also functions to get rid of that.

My showers usually take 10 to 20 minutes tops. I forgot to mention I take military showers. No need to waste all that water when your scrubbing most of the time anyway.

As far as changing bedsheets, again I sleep in them while clean so my bed dosent soil so fast. They only need changing once every 3-4 weeks if your not sleeping in them all dirty IMO.

I find the subject and details in your first post genuinely funny biggrin.gif

There's no feeling like the one after some proper time spent in the shower and a clean shave. Whether I am on my way out or staying in. Just good to go.

You might need to look into this again. What about the fact that we get quite sweaty during nights? This won't leave you untouched in the morning.

This. I usually shower when I get back from work and also in the morning.

OCD much?

I only take showers in the morning for the warmth. That and I can't wake up any other way.

Paging Soapy the Germ Fighter. (Look him up on YouTube.)

Hygiene? Hell, I lived in a fraternity and am not afraid to develop immunities.

Sometimes, out on the desert, I'll work on the apartments all day, get filthy and sweat like a pig. Then I'll fall asleep of the sofa with the cat and wake up with a sizeable amount of hair on me. Now and then, I'll go back to work the next day without cleaning up. I don't bother with deodorant, either. If it's 110 out, it doesn't help much and I figure the sweat glands need to open up and work now and then. Body oils aren't necessarily a bad thing, either.

This sort of vigilant hygiene has only been around for 100 years or less. You'd probably be horrified by what your great-grandparents did.

And, yes, I know about today's standards and will follow them when necessary. I go to office jobs freshly showered and in clean clothes. Same with going out in public, save for hardware stores.

But loosen up some time. Get dirty. Sweat. Let the oils be for a few days. It won't hurt you.

I used to do a lot of backpacking with my Boy Scout Troop. We didn't wash during the trips, save for our hands after using the bathroom and before eating. That's all you really need. I've gone as long as ten days without a shower, and so did everyone else. No one got sick, no one was harmed. We didn't smell good, but there's no need to impress anyone while tramping through the woods.

Loosen up a bit. It's fine to get dirty and smelly. biggrin.gif

I always make sure to shower nicely before sleep, I only get into bed clean :)

I don't know about the baby powder thing, I like to use non-scented glycerin-based soaps only, which is surprisingly hard to find these days, everything they sell in the body shop and "normal" (on how I hate that term) shops, seems to be over-emphasizing trying to smell like some flower, plant or chemical "sex mixture".

Here, here! I'm all about being clean, but there is such a thing as too clean. I take a 6-7 minute shower, scrubbing and soaping up the entire time in under water and hitting every part of my body every morning at the start of the day, brush my teeth in the morning and mouthwash rinse in the night (a second brushing depending on what I may have eaten for my last meal), and I wash my hands when I've used the restroom or if they get superbly filthy. Other than that, I'm pretty OK with a bit of dirt. I don't have the obsessive need to wash my hands after patting the dog that my sister has, I don't shower after every time I sweat like my dad does, and when I'm at work, I have little to no problem, with working on the rig for 12 straight hours and getting back to my bed, getting out of the work clothes and going straight to sleep without showering before.

I have gone many day without showering in the past. Notably, when I was a little kid, and when out camping for an entire week. There is something natural and instinctive about getting really dirty. Its like you become a caveman or something. Eric is right, natural oils are good for skin and hair. Sometimes I will delibertly go 2 or 3 days without showering on the weekends if I notice my hair is completely fried.

But more often than not, I shower every day or every 2 days max, because I work at mcdonalds on the grill and maintenance. That will get you greasy really quick, and make your acne break out. Thats why you see so many people with acne at fast food restraunts.

Camping is different, if you have a lake, you use it, if not, you wash hands when necessary and that's about it. :p  Yes, I like wilderness camping. :)
