Currently, Anneke van Giersbergen, from her collaboration with Devin Townsend on (Devin Townsend Project's) Addicted (awesome album, btw). I now also want to hear her other bands, The Gathering and Agua De Annique.

For me, Eva Cassidy is hands down the best female vocalist.

I've been digging Joan Baez lately. Unfortunately I didn't really have much exposure to female vocalists growing up, so I don't know of anyone who even compares.

 

Anyone have any suggestions for a nice folk-y sound?

Brandi Carlile is one of my favorites - she has a soulful voice and her songs are pretty deep. I love Rilo Kiley (Jenny Lewis) for their eclectic style, and currently really into Missy Higgins.

I wouldn't say she has the absolute best female voice, but Karen O from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs is by far my favorite female vocalist.
