I'm waiting for Shu Treasures premiums from China. I also am on the list for the EML 5 as soon as he gets them in later in the month. The power tubes I haven't done anything with at this point. Suggestions always welcomed.
I just read a review of the updated HRT Music Streamers in Stereophile. I thought maybe of buying the $150 version until I could order the W4S 2. Then I checked the web site and they make a balanced async 24/96 version for $500. It looks to be good. More decisions!
Everyone loves the EML. I have one and really like it. I originally had a Sophia Princess in there and for my tastes the EML is better.
I got the upgraded Sylvania's but they were too harsh for me and I put the stock RCA's back in which sounded better. Then I was able to get a pair of Tung-sol 6AS7G's from ebay and they sound really nice - still breaking them in at 20 hours, yet they are sounding good. I have also read that GEC power tubes are the best with the 6080 and then topped by the 6AS7G. I got a pair of GEC 6080's on ebay and am waiting for delivery.
My Treasures are about to be replaced by a pair of 6SN7 Tung-sol round plates. I have never listened to them, but have read they are among the best drivers out there for the WA22. I don't really have any comparison to the Treasurers other than the stock tubes that came with my amp originally.
A really good thread to check out is the Woo Amp Owners Unite. There are a lot of seasoned tube rollers posting there and everyone is very friendly.
Regarding the HRT Music Streamers. I read that review and those guys over there fell in love with it and with the more advanced version. For me, I am staying away from any USB stuff, especially with a higher end amp like the WA22. I've put a USB stream from my laptop through my DLIII and it was not really all that good. My laptop also has a digital out, and even that sounded much better. I'm a toy lover, but just from my perspective, I'd save that money and use it later for tubes and live with whatever single ended stuff you have even if you have to go from an iPod headphone out to the WA22 input. I'd not spend any money going backwards. The WA22 is such a high-end piece that you may want to think about cash out for two steps back vs. making due and using cash to take a step forward.
Just some thoughts.
