They've had intermittent Grattle for some time, but hasn't been quite bad enough to take action. I've been thinking about tackling it though. I've done some searching and found an old write up. Looks like I have to heat the metal housings on the cups to soften up the glue. Then I can carefully pull out the plastic portion. Once they're apart I can look for any debris that might be touching the drivers or creases on the drivers them selves that would cause the rattling.
It was suggested in the write up that I use a cookie sheet with just a little water to heat the cups. Is this really best? I don't know about moisture getting up into the drivers.. I could think of other things first. I've heard of people using a hair drier, but that also worries me, as I don't want to risk exposing the drivers to excessive air pressure. I'm looking for any suggestions and especially personal experience.
Also, the cable is worn. I had thought there was a problem inside the left cup, which got me into this whole thing. However, I realized the wear is around the split with that plastic thing. Over the time the cables have been stressed from the cups spinning around freely and the jacket is split. The left side has a weak connection now. I was thinking I could snip the cords several inches down and re-cable them with Star Quad I have on hand. Is this a good idea? I don't know how good or bad the stock cable is. I'm not huge into the cables are magic camp, but I wouldn't want to loos anything. I wouldn't mind a slightly longer cable either. If I have everything I need I'd try to do it today or tomorrow. I want to get them ready for the upcoming NYC meet on the 20th. I suppose I could install mono jacks on each cup's cable and also make a balanced XLR cable in case anyone has an amp to really make me hate my life.
