Shure e3c or Ety er-4p?? - Page 5

Most people are convinced they can hear flaws in LAME APS. Almost no one is able to distinguish LAME and wav in double blind testing, no matter how good the equipment.

hydrogenaudio is a great resource for this type of issue.

I found that if you do a direct comparison the WAV has more emotion and there is you something you can feel but not really hear vs the LAME mp3. But once you're listening for about 30 seconds, your brain adjust and you can no longer tell the difference. It was such a minor difference that it wasn't worth re-ripping my collection in WAV.

Yes, that "something you can feel" is called placebo.

Really, unless you do double-blind tests, the results aren't very valid. Just knowing you're listening to a WAV vs. an MP3 will taint your interpretation.

Double blind studies don't eliminate the Experimenter Effect, nor do they eliminate subject compliance. This is especially true when the hypothesis is itself null.

For what it's worth LAME APS files are not totally tranparent, and it would be trivial to design an experiment which would show this. However in most cases they are sufficiently transparent that under most listening conditions the difference is not of any practical significance. Listening several times over to a small excerpt in order to pick out a small detail hardly constitute normal listening conditions.
