A little question about mp3 v0

post #1 of 6

Hi.  I just started using mp3 v0 files in my dap.  my question is rather simple and i didn't manage to find answer after i searched a little.    I know that the avarage bitrate in v0 is something like 265 more or less.  but does it reach 320?  does it go that high?

245kbps is the target bitrate of -V 0 LAME encoded .mp3 files so you end up with something in the  220...260 range according to the wiki I read on Hydrogenaudio. -V 0 can use 320kbps frames but how many it uses, I imagine, depends on the music being encoded. I'm no expert when it comes to .mp3 encoding it must be said. Hope that helped a little.

thanks for the reply..so you are saying that it can reach 320kbs in certain places when the music calls for it?  because i heard that the max bitrate it can reach is 290kbs.

anyway,when looking at the mp3 files i created in my computer;pointing with the mouse on the file itself it shows 320kbs most of the times..why is that?

This is a breakdown of a 176kbps vbr file (not sure of the encoding settings) so yes it seems it can reach 320kbps. I'm not sure about the mouse-over issue.

Bitrates:
------------------------------------------------------------
32 | 1.0%
128 |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||| 27.3%
160 |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||| 33.7%
192 |||||||||||||||||| 15.3%
224 ||||||||||| 9.8%
256 ||||||||| 7.8%
320 |||||| 5.1%
------------------------------------------------------------

I have seen V0 files go past 300kbps, and approach 320 for brief moments.....the more complex the music, the more likely it is that you will see it. foobar2000 has a real-time VBR indicator....that's where I saw that.

Yes, it can go up to 320 kbps. Also see the lame.exe options -b and -B (min and max allowed bitrate in VBR mode).

With "pointing at the file" do you mean in Windows Explorer? Either the Explorer (older version of Windows?) doesn't read the file correctly or you accidentally created a 320 CBR file.

Both foobar2000 and Windows (7) Explorer display the average bitrate correctly on my machine.
