aspiring audiophile, need some direction

i love music and travel quite a bit for work. i am looking for a closed headphone for under 200 (closer to 100) to start with. i will be using this primarily with my ipod for traveling.

 

as of right now i am looking at the sennheiser hd448.

 

Is this a good place to start or is there a better value in that price range

Haven't heard the HD448 but If you do travel a lot on airplanes I would consider getting in ear headphones. The noise isolation will be substantially better than regular headphones.

 

There are many options in your price range. Etymotic, Shure and Head-Direct are all known to perform well.

I have the HD 428. They have a very similar build, and I can tell you that isolation on these is no good for traveling.

If anyone has tried out the hd448 or has a better option in that price range id love to hear about it.

If you travel a lot, go for in-ear, you'll appreciate the isolation, and the size/compactness!

 

Get another set of open or closed phones to enjoy when you are home!

I'll say: 

Head-direct reZERO for in ear

A-T es7 for portable (these will not have enough isolation for a plane ride)

A-T M50 for full-size

I have one of the phones in that family, the HD438; I really like it, but I don't use it for travelling, just at home, so I may not be able to give you useful advice.  It is good for blocking out sounds at home like outside noises and my computer fan, but I don't know if it would be good for travel.
