Hifiman HE-4 Impressions Thread - Page 51

indeed, I realised this so many times when I was testing EF-5 in low gain position (absolutely no power to move them even with the volume turned all way up) but in high gain position is suitable enough to enjoy (I enjoy it so much because of its ability to show every single detail and great resolution) in aspects of power but still it's absolute minimum hearing a few integrated amplifiers (for instance yamaha vintage receivers with dedicated headphone out for orthos ~10W), Lyr and speaker amps

http://youtu.be/nCQg7aXd7bY?t=6m2s   nice kick drum+acoustic bass guitar combo, this is what I love the most using he-4, bass can be so powerful, played on great, multidimensional soundstage but not losing its energy at all with so much air - this is so freaking real comparing to real life unplugged performance / experience, check this one out

http://youtu.be/nCQg7aXd7bY?t=10m50s  let me know how does it sound on your rigs, I am very curious

How about moving up to the EF-6?

I think that might be everything I have ever wanted/dreamed for my he-4 (for the headphones I am done, I don't want anything more in this area, completely satisfied/blown away)

but the price for the ef-6 is really high, need to have some free audition first

I have read it has amazing punch, tonality, attack, thickness and weight of sound - this is my dream actually, pure class A with no feedbacks and no capacitors in audio signal path, with at least 5W

I have a EF-6 in on load right now.  It's doing great with the HE-6s..

would be great to listen to this rig, unplugged performance must be freaking amazing

could you check this amp with he-4 and compare it ? that would be really interesting because I have heard he-4 and he-6 are pretty similar when driven to full potential with nice power

Sorry, I don't have the HE-4s anymore..

I have always been curious about the EF-6, I almost bought it on a few occasions. What are your thoughts on it? and have you tried any lower impedance cans with it?

Thanks. Ortho hp's like the he-4 are a match made in heaven with the Sansui. I'd love to see how it handled the he-6. Hmm...

Thank you, I did not see that post.   I bet the Mad Dogs sing with that power behind them.

I had the urge to go SS and actually was close to pulling the trigger on it and ended up with the SA-31. The temptation to get the EF-6 was based on how much I liked the EF-5 (tube I know, but loved the sound signature) and I heard the EF-6 was a "warmer" SS amp. I am fine with the Audio GD amp, but I always wanted to try the EF-6 with the HE500 and or the LCD-2s..

Audio-gd has really amazing dacs (like nfb 1.32 or master 7) but I would not bet about the amps, I would go blindly for ef-6 in this area knowing ef-5 very well

I sold Lyr and other amps because of this little amp ! It has something unique in its sonic signature and it sounds like pure SS design, there is no freaking averaging / smoothing sound that causes losing too many informations from the source signal (ef-5 vs Lyr for instance)

but wait, sa-31 ?  that accupahase or krell monoblocks clone ? if so I wanted to try the amp some time ago but my local dealer didn't have it :(
