I think that would make the NFB12 more powerful than the EF5. My E9 isn't enough for the HE-4 but I can't say for sure since I haven't had experience with any stronger amps. I believe the EF5 serves the minimum ideal wattage you should drive the HE-4 with which is 2 watts @ 32 ohms. I don't know the conversion but the NFB12's 1800mW into 50 ohms puts it substantially above the EF5 in terms of power. So I wouldn't worry about the NFB12 not being enough.
I heard HE-5LE's at a meet in Nov. last year and I was really blown away. I'm using modded 325i right now that are a ton of fun, but not very accurate and a bit fatiguing. I'd be really happy if I can have most of the fun, in a more accurate, more detailed more comfortable phone, especially with a bigger, better sound stage. I only have a head-five right now for an amp, so I know that won't do. I run it right out of my Auzentech sound card, so I assume there's room for improvement with a good DAC too. I'm desperately waiting for reviews of the Audio-gd NFB-10SE, which is on promo for $500 (plus like $70-75 shipping). However, opinions on current NFB-10 series amps seem to indicate that the Lyr might be better for any of the HE-4 or 5xx. I would ideally like a really nice, powerful amp, and a good DAC, or a combo. I listen to a lot of electronic and pop sort of stuff as well as some classic rock, and really like Fleetwood Mac for example. I heard the 5LE out of a PPAv2 with a good DAC and I thought it did everything right. I would surely like tube sound with music that it works well on, but I can't sacrifice speed or dynamics to get it. I'm told this isn't really an issue with the Lyr? So I'm trying to decide weather to go for an AMP/DAC first that will improve the phones I have while I save up again for a set of orthos, or jump on some orthos and try running them on something full size I can get cheap or even borrow. My uncle has a handful of Hafler amps in assorted sizes that might do ok. I'm hearing a lot of really good things about using full size amps that "cost a lot less" but few specifics on model and price. Around here, that might still be a $500 investment.. I'm really looking for some specific recommendations, preferably in the <$200 range, if such thing is possible. More preferably in the <$100 range if 'm looking for something used!
Also, I haven't seen much direct comparison between HE-4, 5-LE, and 500. I know I liked the 5-LE a lot. I hear that the 500 is easier to drive and also "similar, but a little better in every way." Now I hear that HE-4 is very similar to the 5-LE. I also hear that 500 is very close to the HE-6 and maybe better with a lot of equipment that can't quite drive a 6.. And that the 6 is clearly superior when properly driven, and that the 500 is a bad deal because the 5-LE and even the 4 are too close behind in sound and the 6 too close ahead in price. (Esp. used? haven't seen any come up yet..) So I'm confused and don't know what to do. I'm aware of, and suspecting the hush-hush (around here, anyway) phenomena that passed $300 or so, it's almost entirely a matter of personal preference and differences that seem black and white when written down, are really very small in real life.. I just don't want to jump on a used 5LE and spend the next few years wondering if I should have held out for a 500 or saved a few bucks on a 4. I also don't want to spend $450-800 on an Amp/DAC combo and one day find a $150 receiver that sounds as good or better with the orthos.
I haven't really heard of Audio-GD before these recent posts but now I'm really interested in them. Though, I'm skeptical since they're so powerful yet so cheap, with DAC built in! But after doing some reading they are apparently very good. The NFB-12 at ~$230 shipped is VERY appealing to me. And it's like at least 3x more powerful than the FiiO E9. I'm considering selling my old Ultrasone cans and FiiO amps to fund a purchase of the NFB-12. Or I might just want to be patient and wait til I can afford a Lyr. I really want gobs of power to drive these things.
Haha. Thats the idea I'm getting. I think the he-4 are good. But I want the LCD-2.
Honestly I am considering the LCDs too. I just wish it had velour pads.
Has there been any word on any different ear pads for the LCD's?
Ok. I went on the site and only saw the spare ear pads. I'll go take a gander at the forum.
