Right now I think I'd like to focus on bulking up the list of stock headphones, but sometime in the future I might be willing.

Maybe do something like focus on one particular model and see what peoples mods of it look like. Dunno.

But if you feel like it you can contact me next year and maybe I can do something.

Awesome, I have a few other mods to try on the he4 so that's a plan!

Any of you guys wonder what the driver sealing by rubber putty would do to the he4? As well as the rtv silicone or lighter version tape mod for the pads? I think with the first mod the he4 could compete with the he400's bass and with the second mod maybe even surpass it.. just a thought for the adventurous.

Please explain...

You get eraser rubber putty and put it between the drivers and cups. I think the HE400 has an excellent bass because of the plastic parts and them probably being a tighter fit/seal onto the cups:

The silicone RTV of the pads also adds more seal to it by not allowing sound to escape between the pads mount ring and baffle:

But quite understandable if that's too much of a leap there so there's this alternate "lite" version: skip the RTV silicone and seal the pads to the cup via electrical tape:

Soundsgoodtome, by doing this, do you get driver flex when you put your headphones on? Only reason I never bought an Audeze product was due to the extreme driver flex would result in a popping when I put them on my ears. The earpads are designed on Audeze to create a "perfect" seal... I got that same "perfect seal" with NVX pads, but never got a popping, luckily. Driver flex was still audible, so I felt the risk-reward was not worth it. What's your thoughts?

Anyone looking for a HE-4 for sale, PM me.  I have them listed for sale.

Have had my pair for just over a month (bought from Stillhart), did a bit of modding and just getting the itch to rotate through a few open back mid-fi phones to complement my HE-6.

In particular, looking for a HD-650 to try as my first target.

The 650 is like the polar opposite of the HE-4. Very complementary sound. Mid forward, veiled highs, lots of bass quantity with low quality.

Haven't done the full seal yet but I think on/off your head should be fine. Maybe putting them pad-down on a hard flat surface might be a problem or if you put on headphones like Alan from The Hangover lol.

I could see it being a problem if you were to use the nvx or similar pad and you have both driver as well as the baffle sealed.

You make it sound like a terrible headphone! I really like it, reminds me of the mad dogs but with bass and better detail. The detail is amazing for such a warm-ish phone.

On the contrary, I think it's a fantastic headphone.  But it's still got veiled highs, mid-forward and sloppy bass (compared to a planar).  At the current price of $335 on Amazon, it's almost a no-brainer.

But the thing I really noticed about it is that it sounds AMAZING with a complementary chain and it sounds just okay without.  When you have it singing, it makes bad stuff sound good and good stuff sound great!  It's the only headphone I've heard yet in that price range that does that.  The only other things I've heard that are like that are the HE-560 and LCD-2, which cost 2-3x as much.
