Hifiman HE-4 Impressions Thread - Page 200

I'll be honest, I was overwhelmed by headphones and didn't give the NVX pads a serious A/B to the Alcantaras but it's no question that they improve the staging quite a bit.

Did you get a chance to measure the resistance of that Nordost cable? mrscotchguy and I both found that this cable smoothed out that treble spike in a very noticeable way. Buuuuuut you needed to crank your amp up quite a bit in order to get the headphones to listening levels. It just seemed like the sound was getting choked somehow...

No, unfortunately, everything is still in their boxes. I had a wedding that night, work the next day, a training for bartenders working big Whiskey Festival last night til the wee hours. Needless to say, i havent made any time to borrow a multi meter. Maybe i can snag one before i have to take/ship all the gear back.

How much resistance do cables normally add?

Most should be under 1 ohm, I think. The Philips X1 cable has 1.7 (IIRC) and people were up in arms about it changing everything.

Just thought I'd mention that I'm officially part of the HE-4 club now.  The star felt mod is already done on mine.  I think the next thing I'm going to do is order the Shure Alcatara pads since I've heard they're good on both the HE-4 and my SoundMAGIC HP100.  But since they don't change the sound much on the HE-4, I'm trying to decide what my next pad swap may be.

I read Ron's guide, but I'm still not sold on what to try first.  I'm looking for something that will maybe bring up the mids a bit, give it a bit more balanced presentation, without giving up much in the way of bass.  If it loses some treble, I can live with that.  Thoughts?

Ron's holey-felt mod should do the trick.

PAD FELT MOD:

Introduction

I have already talked a bit about using different materials inserted inside Hifiman pleather (or velour) pads to further smoothen HE-4's treble response... And I really enjoyed the way rug pad worked with Sennheiser HD800 - it lessened resonances inside cup chamber without decreasing airiness and imaging too much. See the physical difference between it and typical 2mm felt:

Rug pad was nice with HD800... But HE-4 may need something more dense. Therefore I decided to try this approach with the felt itself... I wanted to achieve smoothening without decreasing imaging, sense of openness and level of airiness too much (which may be the case with a non-perforated felt).

How to do it?

Here is an image how it can look like (above is a non-perforated, below is a perforated version):

Insert one circle inside OR underneath each pad. Inside means INSIDE the pads - it will hold there by friction. Underneath means in between pad and driver - it will hold there because it won't have a chance to move at all.

How does it effect sound?

I must say that it works as expected... Slightly decreased air as well as smoother treble response but the quality of imaging remained the same - or even very slightly improved due to less airy/more black background. Slightly cavernous timbre of the pleather pads is fixed. Sense of openness is a bit decreased, perceived soundstage width also slightly (but you cannot have everything). This mod works best IMHO when inserted underneath the pads (not inside the pads as I was using the felt before) but you could always try to insert it inside as well for slightly different effect on the overall sound. Description of slight tonal improvements follows...

"Especially focusing on both male and female vocals, I found that while both pleather and velour pads gives similarly nice male vocals (a bit different but similarly fine), female vocals are significantly less natural with velours (more sibilance, less natural tonality). With pleather pads, I would say that both male and female vocals were sufficiently natural but the felt (insterted inside/underneath the pads) improved on that appreciably - it basically made both male and female vocals a bit more full and somewhat "shifted" sibilance in a way that it's pronounced in a more natural way (there is still some slight sibilance but now more authentic/natural-sounding)."

I would like to encourage anyone to experiment a bit with the mod - try to use perforated or non-perforated felt, insert it inside or underneath the pleather pads - to find the best configuration. And, in the end, it may happen you would rather prefer to use the pads alone, with no felt.

Dumb question:  Where do I get felt?  Amazon?  Hobby store?

EDIT - I assume something like this would work:  http://www.amazon.com/24-Piece-Kunin-Rainbow-Classicfelt-12-Inch/dp/B00D32NSLU ?

Arts & Crafts stores like Michael's would have them. Not sure where else, maybe a fabric shop?

Anyone want to hear how amazing he4s are? If you can get into a very jazz influenced metal mood, please take a listen to Ka$cade from, the unbelievably talented group of fellows called Animals As Leaders. I know ive mentioned them before and im sure alot of you know who they are. But this particular new song has blown me away on the he-4 every single time i have listened to it. The layers, the separation, the soundstage, the air, only could be done by the he-4 this well. Well maybe stax but i havnt the funds to go down that path...yet
