So, ive heard/had the mad dog 3.2, loved it, different from the he4 obviously, but whats the closest ill get to the he4 in a closed can? I cant really have an open can past this october so im looking to unfortunately sell/trade my he4....any suggestions/hatred/death threats welcome.

I'm sure you'll be able to get a sale eventually. The HE-4 is a great set of cans.

Try a ZMF V1, much more air and treble then the MadDog, same bass

HONESTLY, dude get your self a Modded W1000x, the W1000x and HE 4 fight for my head time! The W1000x is... very different from the HE 4 but also simmilar, it lacks the smoothness of treble and sub bass of the HE 4, and has rather forward mids, but both have a great tactile sound to them... and WONDERFUL sense of depth to the music

and you might like teh Sound Magic HP 100 for around $150 used, you could also try to blitz KREIG and get a Alpha Dog

my shure 840 does good, but its more my, garage woodworking throw around hp, not great for critical listening side by side with the he4

My EF-5 has arrived.. First impressions: there's more low-end presence, highs are less prominent and it's overall smoother than the Aune T1 alone which is more aggressive. It seems like that's the so called "tubey sound".

Sounds pretty much perfect for the HE-4. I am still really looking at the Darkvoice I have heard it is a very good pair with the HE-4, and if you rebuild it with better parts and tubes (The included ones are on the cheap side) it is in the same league as things like the WA6, but has higher power out.

The wa6 with Sophia is def something I've wondered about for the he4, buy that darkvoice already!

Too expensive right now since I have college costs to worry about. I think I am probably going to have to wait a while. Also if I buy the Darkvoice I have to do a rebuild for sure to make it work its best with low impedance headphones (It needs different output caps to avoid having issues with bass cutoff and it also needs better parts since the stock ones are bottom of the barrel to reduce costs).

Glad you like it! I notice that mine needs a good 20-30 minutes to get fully warmed up.. and sounds even better the next morning after I fall alseep with music playing all night long!

Since tubes are cheap for it, I've picked up a couple that sound a good deal different than the factory tube.

Power Rating Efficiency 90dB SPL 105dB SPL 120dB SPL

HE-4 2W 86 2.30mW 72.68mW 2300mW

Got bored and did some calculations. Based on this data when you interpolate in an exponential graph you will see that you can get about 110dB SPL at 650mW with the HE-4. If I am interpreting this correctly this means that the minimum power required to get optimal performance out of the HE-4 is 650mW since at an 80dB listening level (Where your ears are most accurate and music sounds the best without too much risk of long term hearing damage.) you get about 30dB of overhead for dynamic range meaning unless you are listening to some insane orchestral stuff you aren't ever going to run into a dynamic range wall.
