I am guessing that these are going to have almost flagship tier specs. I hear literally no distortion anywhere in the frequency range.

I'd be surprised if it didn't have some distortion.  It's a single-ended planar and that design has tradeoffs.

and advantages I understand

Yes just like how double-sided has tradeoffs and advantages.

Yeaper

It'd be funny if the distortion figures end up being less.

Less than what-- an LCD2 or HE-500?  An Abyss might be the closest comparison.

Were most vintage orthos single or double ended?

So who has taken apart the HE 4? Any one have a nice guide with some pictures for me. I'm contemplating doing the Grill mod... but I'd like to have a nice visual aid before I take my pair apart.

If you're just re grilling, no need to actually take them apart. You just pop the black rings out that hold the grill in. Theres 4 tabs that hold the ring in. If you want to actually take them apart and remove the felt, soundsgoodtome has some pics he posted.

The tabs that hold the grills on are SUPER fragile though, keep that in mind. If you can get a thin card or plastic spudger, wedge it in between the cup and the ring. Do not wedge it between the grill and the ring. If you are looking at the headphone with the HE-4 badge pointing up at 12:00, the four ring tabs are at 45 degree angles (i.e. 1:30, 4:30, 7:30, and 10:30). Again, stick your spudger or card or w/e in between the cup and the ring near one of these points and push the ring inward. It will bend the ring slightly and the tab will pop up and out. The rest of the tabs will be easier.

Just to note, I broke one of the tabs off of mine on first try because I tried wedging between the ring and the grill and pulled up (didn't understand how the ring was connected). Luckily, I contacted HFM and they sent me two new rings. Well, two more rings... one of the rings they sent me had broken tabs on it already.

Somebody should start making and selling custom grills for HFM headphones since everyone seems to think that they help quite a bit.
