DAC dilemma for Mid-fi setup

Thread Starter

Hey folks,

I havent really kept up with the happenings here over the last one year as life took over! Between graduation, 2 new jobs and brand new first born, its been hectic!!

Regardless, I want to get some help in upgrading a couple of my rigs:

1. Desktop rig - Currently has optical  going into a ZERO which feeds a DV 336SE. Most of the time I am using the Sennhieser 650. Occasionally the AKG 701.

Need something to upgrade from the stock ZERO as the DAC. Really want a DAC/headphone amp combo for this rig as I dont seem to be doing any critical listening anymore. I am considering getting rid of the DV as well and simplifying my setup while at the same time upgrading. Budget: $500.

2. Stereo 2-ch rig - consists of a SB3/Marantz 4001/TT as sources; Rotel as preamp/phono; NAD 272 as a AMP; Salk Songtowers as speakers and a nice Morris Chair from Stickley as components.

Want to upgrade the DAC to something nicer! Dont really need USB but wont hurt either. Was planning to go with a PS audio DL III but after a peek at AUDIO GDs stuff - I am very driven to get one of his units.

    Budget: $1000-1200.

I am looking at Audio GD for solutions for both systems. But his products as well as the website is mind boggling!

Please help!!

Well, I can't help you with the second part of your... problem, wink.gif. but I have some suggestions for the first one.

The Headroom Desktop Amp would be one heck of a solution for you. It's a amp/dac combo like your looking for, is made to be used on the desktop, and has great synergy with 650/701s. It's a little above your budget, but may be worth shooting for, or trying to find one used.

AudioGD also hase a dew one box solutions for you in that price range.

I'll let you know if I think of anything else.
