just bought a DAC off e-bay and it's not working :(

I just bought a tube DAC from China off e-bay and it's not working upon arrival. The power light turns on but that's it. I noticed that the tube inside does not light up or warm up. Could the tube be defective? I would like to try to change the tube, but I am worried it will void the warranty if I open it up. Unfortunately, the seller is away for a few days and hasn't responded to my emails yet. I am frustrated about this and really want to fix it if I can. Should I just stay put and wait for the seller to respond or risk voiding the warranty by opening it up and trying to change the tube?

it's a usb DAC and the computer does recognize it when I plug it in. The problem is there is no sound output at all.

If it is a USB DAC and it is not recognized when it is plugged in then it's probably not the tube.

Sounds like a power problem.

I would wait for the seller and see if they will replace it.

Agreed - tube problems shouldn't affect that.

No, the usb does work... the computer does recognize it when I plug it in, and I can select the device. The only problem is there is no sound output at all. Everything appears normal except that the tube does not light up or warm up and there is no sound.

However, there is also a output that supposedly bypasses the tube and that does not work either.

Sorry, I guess we mis-read that.

I'd still wait for the seller to see if you can get an exchange.

If they won't then you can start taking it apart and testing things.

Can you point us to which DAC it is?

Ok I see it's the same thing than the "Maverick D1", first of all did u read the "manual" ?

Here there are some kind of information about using this DAC : http://www.xshn.com/en/display.asp?id=89

I know that in the inside of this dac there are some jumpers, and some cables that link the differents PCB inside the unit, try to read the topic talkin' about the Maverick D1 to see if there are any "hints" to help you to test your DAC, perhaps it's just a wire unplugged inside the unit.

And be careful, never open an unit which is plugged, just open it to inspect if there's not something wrong in the inside (OPA are on sockets, try to apply a small pressure on them to fully insert the OPA in their sockets).

Good luck, i can't help you more because i don't have this unit, i was interested in this DAC for a time, but i finally bought an Audio-GD and i'm really happy with it...

I opened the unit, but everything looked fine. I tried using a different tube, but it didn't help. The tube does not warm up at all. frown.gif

Contact quickly the vendor, and explain that the DAC was Dead On Arrival and ask a replacement or free repair...

And good luck, don't hesit to make a report here in a while, so we'll see is the vendor has a good service....
