Looking for a new DAP

Thread Starter

So, I've currently got a Zune HDD 120 GB, which is working fine for me, but... I've got a computer with multiple OS's (7 64-bit, OS X 10.6, and Ubuntu 10.10), and I really don't like having to boot into Windows every time I want to load music onto my player. Actually, I don't even have the Zune software on my computer right now. Also since then, I've reripped my collection to FLAC, which isn't compatible with the Zune. I've currently got my music library managed through Foobar2000. Managed maybe isn't the best word, but foobar2000 is how I'm listening to music. My requirements:

1. High capacity (preferably >=120 GB) - this means I'll probably limited to HDD-based players. I suppose I could do SD and sacrifice some capacity, but...

2. Capable of playing FLAC is a must (~95% of my library is FLAC)

3. USB Plug-N-Play for file transfer/management

4. Good UI (artist, album, genre, playlist views at minimum)

5. Good sound quality (for a portable)

So, any suggestions? Budget-wise I'm looking at something ~$200 +/- $100.

Edit: Also, I would like something that's natively capable of playing FLAC; though, I'm not entirely opposed to loading 3rd party firmware like Rockbox. Also, I'm open to upcoming releases as well (I'm probably not going to purchase for a good while).

for all those features AND 120+GB, the only thing that may fit the bill is the Cowon X7

If you can live with 40 GB, get an 8GB Clip+ and a 32 GB microSD card and rockbox it.

The X7 seems to fit the bill quite nicely.

For the Clip+ recommendation, I'm not sure if I can justify the purchase; the Clip+ itself is pretty cheap (~40-50), but a sufficiently sized MicroSD card is pretty costly. So for about $200, I'm getting 40 GB of storage, with a somewhat outdated DAP. Don't get me wrong; I think the Clip+ is great for its base price, but I'm someone who can live with the downsides of a HDD-based player.

Somewhat outdated? It's only been on the market a little over a year, I think....and don't discount what Rockbox brings to it, either.

Rockbox being the keyword here indeed. Last I checked, 32 GB microSDHC were ~$82, so that's a little more than $130 for a 40 GB, clip-on player with a tiny footprint and the awesome Rockbox.

Yeah the clip and the fuze are great choice. Very portable and great value for money.

The clip+ is not a bad choice, however for your needs I second the recommendation of the Cowon X7.  It has large capacity options(120, 160gb respectively), ridiculous battery life at 103 hours for music and 10 hours for video, support for FLAC and other codecs, and Cowon's reputation for outstanding sound quality.

Wrong choice of words on my part. I meant along the lines of minimalistic UI (I do love me some big screens).
