Completing transactions generated on Head-Fi

Hi, sorry if I've posted this in the wrong area. I just wanted info on what common practice is on Head-Fi for buying and selling, specifically ways to complete transactions that provide some sort of protection for both buyer and seller. I have read the FAQ and am well aware of the common sense considerations like feedback, but would like to know how actual transactions are done.

If the seller requests a PayPal payment for example, is it a matter of sending the payment through, then waiting and praying for the item to arrive? My understanding of PayPal is that there is no buyer protection for transactions outside of specific Checkout methods (ie ebay) even if Purchase of Goods is chosen as reason for the Send Money process. Is there any advantage in sending the payment trough as a Gift instead? Reading the PayPal terms, there seems to be no advantage of choosing one over the other, and both also incur fees.

Is there a way to request an ebay listing in a way that only a specific buyer can buy the item?

Outside of that and if a transaction does go sour, is there really anything the Mods can do about it?

I'd greatly appreciate any insight into the process or alternative suggestions presented. Thanks.

Edit: To the person I'm PMing about a purchase - Please don't take this the wrong way... I'm just overly cautious and the amount involved is not minor to me.

Yes, PayPal can refund you if you do not pay as a gift. Pay the extra 3% (or whatever) if needed to get the protection. Be sure to complete the PayPal payment as a transaction. Read PayPal's terms, but you should be able to get protection.

Secondly, make the payment with a credit card. That way, if PayPal falls down on a bad transaction, you'll be able to dispute the charge with the credit card issuer. Most of them are good about this - and PayPal knows it.

As for Head-Fi's Staff, we can sort of act as mediators. If I get a report of a bad transaction, I'll make an inquiry to the other side to get their side of the story. If there's some dispute, we can make suggestions and try to help the parties come to an agreement. Most people here are honest and want to do the right thing. If a dispute arises, sometimes it helps if a third party comes in to listen to both sides and see if a compromise can be made. We can't make a binding decision, of course, and both sides have to agree, but having another person involved can often help that process along.

When there's a scam, however, we don't usually hear back from the scammer. In that case, we can remove the scammer's other auctions, post warnings and possibly ban them. There's only so much we can do. However, we want to make sure that sales and trades go well here, since that's an important part of Head-Fi. We have very little patience for scammers and will shut them down as quickly as possible.
