Hello, I currently have a Burson audio amp (HA-160) and HD-650 headphones.  Right now I am hooking this up straight to my pc and im looking to upgrade.  Should I wait for the matching Burson DAC to come out or should I look at somthing from audio-gd (or somone else?).  Budget is $700 or less.  I would like optical, coax, and USB support (usb not so necessary). Im looking at upgrading to the HD-800 down the road.

Am I going to notice a big difference by adding this?  Right now im just using the x-fi in my pc straight to the amp (double amping = bad? )  Any ideas?

Hi,

It's difficult to say whether you'll see a 'big' difference or not. Heck, some people can't see the difference from a low end dac to a high end dac. I for one came from a STX to a v-dac which wasn't what I'd call a big improvement. The v-dac had a slightly more forward presentation too. When I got my Buffalo 32S, I found it to be a lot better than the v-dac. We aren't talking about a similar difference between different headphones or amps but there is a difference which can be quite significant with certain gear (eg HD800). I think you should look into upgrading your dac, based on my own experiences.

How about the new pop pulse 1796 dac. It has all three inputs, and you would have money left over to play around with nicer power cables and interconnects, or music.

If you wanted all of your budget to go toward the dac, the music hall DAC, Xindac 5, or the best yet in this or price range, the Eastern Electric MiniMax DAC. In fact, disregard everything Ive just said and go with the MiniMax DAC. It's warm nature will nicely compliment the Bursons sound sig.
