Thanks guys, I'll keep the Denon and Ultrasones in mind, but I'm happy with my K271 now, don't need to look for something else in that regard.
Just received my Grado SR325is... First half an hour I had a chronic big smile on my face, and had no patience to listen to an entire song, I wanted to try something esle all the time ("how awesome would that song sound?").
After more analytic listening I can say that the range is pretty small, no real deep bass, and no real upper treble. However, the bass and treble are absolutely excellent, although the headphones have very prominent mids of course. I really don't have any trouble with "shrill treble" a lot of people here are complaining about. Like I said, I like them a lot, just like the bass.
Then the mids of course, like heaven! Extremely detailed... Unbelievably detailed... Did I say that they are very detailed? Anyway, I hear the true "guitar sound". Guitars never sounded so real... I can hear the movement of the fingers and from the pick (milliseconds before actually picking the string) over the strings which I never hear before.
Anyway, I'm very very happy. Only thing the AKGs excel in is the greater range, and more balanced sound. The latter I don't mind much, if I balanced is important I just get the AKGs. The range is the only thing I would say an improvement would be over these SR325s. While writing that I realize it could be because of the prominent mids that the range seems smaller. I'm not sure yet. But I surely love the the Grado sound! I'll surely have wet dreams about the sound of the high end Grados!
Oh, and they are very comfortable too! I was a bit hesitant about that because of the over-the-air design, but there is really not much to complain about!
Glad you like them mate!
As you knew already, I have somewhat more problems with the treble/upfrontness of my SR225's, but I was and still am very happy with the bass en dynamics of the Grado's, that positively surprised me. I take the Grado's for what they are, they're not leaving this house. while.
The guitar sound is simply fantastic, I definetely share that opinion with you also. Guitar vibration sounds like it's made in heaven. Very recognisable the lack of patience to listen to entire songs. You just want to test how certain songs, mixes and especially guitar sounds that you already know, sound like in 'Grado style'.
And yeah, how would RS-1 or higher with great amps sound like!
One thing I can't agree on with you; what the heck are you talking about with comfortable? It's not very painful or something like that (unless maybe when you have them on for 10 hours or something), but comfortable? AKG can be comfortable, Beyerdynamic is comfortable, the Grado's I do not find comfortable. It's just ok, for 1 hour, 2 tops (but I tried only the bowls yet).
Enjoy my friend, congrats with a balanced set, as you seem to have now.
Soundwise - I'll come back to that later.
Comfort - Well, they are not in the league with the AKGs and Beyers, but for what they are (on-ear headphones), I really can't complain. That is, if you are in an optimal and static position...
- weight of the cans + on ear design = a lot of wobbling if you move
- I hate the "stethoscope" cable
- Cable is very short to me
