Finished the amp today! I received my Hammond case(s) the day before Thanksgiving and began test fitting the board. I knew that the board would be a tight fight with the PowerEx battery but unfortunately that was a bit of an understatement because I couldn't get it to fit at ALL. Additionally, I had to rework some of the components, particularly the leads on the DC charging jack and volume/power potentiometer because they were hanging down too far from the bottom of the board and making direct contact with the case. I had to remove most of the solder from the joints, clip the leads with my diagonal cutters and resolder the joints (otherwise I was pretty much guaranteed to short out the entire thing), and then begin the testing phase all over again.

I drilled the front panels using the template with the help of my friend and his dad (and his drill press), though I was looking at having my friend CNC mill the panels for ultimate bling factor. I was tempted to purchase the pre-drilled/milled panels from AMB but I think the engraving is kind of distracting and the screws are way too big, not to mention how EXPENSIVE they are. My friend offered to CNC mill the panels for $50.00 which would have been more than AMB charges, but I would be able to customize the text and I would have more personal attachment to it. I'm toying with the idea of producing these for friends and members of Head-Fi if there's enough interest, and if I do I will probably pursue the CNC milled front panels.

I'll be posting more finished pictures in the next few days (those were just a few teasers), as well as beginning building my second Mini3 as I purchased enough parts for two and would like to sell one to recoup the costs. If anyone is interested in purchasing one of these, please contact me for pricing and availability :)

Mods, can we move this thread to the DIY forum?

You might want to actually contact a mod about that. Try Uncle Erik.

Y'know, I think I'll just give up DIYing forever. Parts from China get lost in the post, things always go wrong, and I'll never, ever be able to solder this well.

My ambitions for building a gamma1/2 have been tempered by this magnificence.

(Translation: good work.)

There are plenty of members of the trade here who would love to DIY for you.

Heh. Thanks for the offer, but I think my new soldering iron might jump out at night and burn me if I start turfing builds over to other people when things get tricky. Anyway, I hope to get better - slowly. Certainly the new soldering iron has helped with that.

Is there any particular reason why you so want to build a gamma1, even if it's not for your own use? I've seen you mention it before. Just curious. cool.gif

Why, I wasn't suggesting you had to choose me as your MOT, I'm sure there are plenty of other MOTs out there.

I really, really want to hear it. biggrin.gif After my next Millet build, I'll be building a gamma2, so I'll get to hear it eventually. Believe it or not, I enjoy building things for people.

Also, sorry for derailing your thread.

The last time I checked, AMB is in the United States... wink_face.gif

And since you're in the UK, Farnell UK and RS components are good sources for the other parts.

Btw, wompa164, nice build log.

It's actually for a different build, but I see your point. Thanks for the parts sources.

It just takes some practice, don't get discouraged! Soldering is a lot of fun once you get the hang of it, and if you do a little bit of research/studying ahead of time, your technique can improve exponentially.

Wompa - just wanted to say that I have enjoyed the mini3 you built immensely! How are the front plates coming along with your engraving/logo on it?

I'll be doing a video review soon on the unit and will update when it's up...you've done some quality work on this thread.

didn't order the panels to make my mini^3 as cheap as possible...lol

the knob was from a defective hakko soldering station.

This build log is giving me a lot of inspiration to work on this.  I have a mini^3 kit on order from glass jar audio and hope to make some time to start it when it comes in.

That engraving looks great Moly, would you mind posting some more details on it?
