Gaming Competition site issuing Spyware to members without them knowing

Well, I can't give the name of the site, Im scared they will try to sue me for slandering them or something

but this competition site has a .launcher application that must be used to launch your game to dissuade cheating, the community voted against it and it was forced onto them.  People are reporting it as spyware and norton detects harmful things apparently.

its a star wars game and i tried to contact lucasarts support forums but they make it difficult to get your account created, im having problems with getting the email account confirmed.  Shame really, I wish I could do something about all of this lol

Steam?

no, this is a custom made program made by some random kid and forced onto the community who plays this game online.  The site tracks player wins and competition stats, to remain on the site you are forced to download this launcher that detects any change in game files, then uploads that info to X admin's computer

its a mess, nobody wanted it and people are complaining like wild, anyone who complains gets their comments removed from the forums and could get a ban if they keep pushing like i did lol.  I wanted to lucas arts to open an investigation since this site is using their game and brand to issue out potential harmful spyware and upload personal pc data to some other kids PC who has the admin title on that site lol

Did you get banned for using a cheat or just for posting about it?

I got banned for opposing the decision to force this launcher onto the community.  As did a few others, and anyone who is persistent about its stupidity and unsafe nature gets their comments removed from the forums for this site, or gets a ban.  This site held a vote and those who opposed it won, a few weeks later ( recently ) it was made mandatory.

Edit:  Im going to post the links.  I have to go on record in saying that its not proven to be harmful but it sure does look like it if people are saying norton detects it as a threat and this was literally forced down their throats.

Topic 1 made back in August

Topic 2 made shortly after with voting winning again the use of this launcher

The recent forced launcher topic

The admins here are notorious for not understanding game mechanics or anything related to coding a game or software.  They are very bias and seem to not really care if they force something on a community.  Very sad.  I've been an activist there for years.

It's not libelous/slanderous if it's true.

Why not simply quit playing the game?

Maybe take up golf or something.

well, I dont know if it is nor am i saying it is for sure ( for legal reasons )

but they are not good at listening to the community, forcing something dumb like this on the community, removing users posts and flat out banning them if they oppose is pretty ridiculous, ive delt with these guys for years.  The worst of the worst.

(double post oops sorry, tried to edit the one above and quote ya )

A lot of people did.  But its not easy to give up a game you played for 5 years every day and to keep your stats listed.  Its the only site that has star wars battlefront 2 competition stat listings and matches.  My interest in this is that people are saying the launcher is like punkbusters, it gets your info and uploads it somewhere.  Its detected by norton as a threat, and there is no reason to force this onto the community.  People are distrusting of the admins there.  They really do not know much about what they are talking about.  It's very sad.

I am a occasional gamer. Nothing against the OP but I have a difficult time understanding why one would choose to play an online game when many believe scrupulous people are in control of the site.

Did you mean why are people still visiting and using that site?  Well, thats because its as i said, its the only site to hold star wars battlefront competition.  People are sticking around because the admins are removing posts on the discussion that could lead to people actually getting some real information from real players.  As I said, they are removing posts and just banning people.  This is what some people are scared of.  What is the reason for imposing this onto the community, forcing it and even after people voted against it, banning people who oppose them, and removing posts?  Wouldn't that concern you that people are not getting the entire picture and that people who are unaware of what the launcher does or could do?

concerns me heavily lol

As a person who used to play SWBFII on a regular basis, I must admit this is very underhanded.

LucasArts will not do anything. There's nothing to be done, they are really in it for the money now, not for the PC community that really brought them fame. (BTW, they abandoned us back in 2004 or thereabouts)

Unfortunately, SWBFII is really the last of its kind, and to find a real replacement would be nearly impossible, for the factor listed above.

Jump ship while you still can. LucasArts is all for console peasants now.

May I suggest a Quake-based game?

Warsow.

Do it.

(Biased to all Quake-engined games, including Source [TF2 ftw])

were you a pc player or console?

anyway i am done being an activist, if they want to allegedly release spyware to players and they wish to remain a competitor on that site, let them.  Im sure lucas arts wouldnt do anything, but they are known for being snobby with the brand and logo.  If someone is releasing spyware to people packaged in a star wars game, im sure they might get upset.  They sued little kids for making music videos and movies with the star wars battlefront 2 engine called A Clone Apart, i wouldnt put anything past lucas arts

PC all the way.

SWBFII has been on the decline for a while now, so it seems. This looks like the last nail in the coffin. I would play for fun, not for competition. Not anymore, anyway.

Not only is the software devious, but the idea behind it is even more troubling--to get rid of cheaters.

This game is so old now that cheaters are few and far in between. Only the hardcore players remain, and if they can't come to a mutual consensus that it would be best for the community to do a 'handshake' agreement, or 'friend of the server' system, then nothing can save them. They will perish with the mess they made.
