The Ever Popular Debate: Best Sounding (Budget) Portable Player?

HI everyone,

As much as I like the simplicity of my iPod Nano, it lacks a couple of things. For one, mine has a whopping 8GB capacity /sarcasm which holds about 15% of my audio collection, which is simply depressing. However, that is not the player's fault. That is my fault for buying something with such a limiting capacity. But it does lack a couple of things. It doesn't sound all that great for one. It's not as bad as some of my older player's but its definitely not above average.

So I am in the market for a new player with a capacity of either 32GB or 64GB preferably.

I've been considering a Zune HD for a while, but I am not sure how it sounds compared to other players. I don't want to spend terribly a lot but I don't have to cheap out.

Does anyone have any suggestions or opinions on what portable player they think sounds the best. The HiFiMans are marveled on this forum it seems, but I don't really want to spend that much if possible. =D

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Cowon J3.

Would an S9 be that much a difference? Set aside the small difference in the amp.

I believe they sound the same - I'm not a J3 or S9 owner, but I've had the i9 and older Cowon models.

They're among the best players you can get.

Alright thank you. I know the S9 does not have micro SD but I'm not sure if I really need that. Thanks for the help.

How does the the X-Fi 2 sound in comparison to an S9 or J3.

Oh and I "prefer" the S9 to the J3 because it is cheaper...

Creative aren't good at all. If you don't want to spend much then a Clip+, as suggested, is excellent.

The Clip+ is really quite compelling, you are right Can you say 40GB for $150? + Rockbox + overall good quality = great deal

I haven't been the slightest bit impressed with Creative as of the late.

A vote for the Clip+ from me, but the Hippo Gumstick sits somewhere between a Clip+ RB  and a Clip+ RB-Fiio e5.

Actually interesting point. Because the Clip+ is so small, having an amp go along with it wouldn't make it terribly huge and is a pretty viable thought. Maybe I'll DIY a Cmoy on a custom size PCB or something.
