Hey guys,

Long store short, I decided that I may not go for a complete re-mold of my Um3x's and I may just go for custom tips. However, I really want to use the new Twag 64" cable I got from whiplash

but my Um3X's are not the removable cable version. So short of finding someone who would be willing to trade + a little cash (!!!!), I would like to attempt re-wiring these myself.

Background, I am a computer engineering student and the soldering iron is no stranger to me, however, I would like to find out what is a good way to determine +/- for each driver on my Um3X's? I would like to make sure I maintain the correct polarity. So is there a way I can do this with a Multimeter?

Your help would be greatly appreciated and in return I would like to make the first step-by-step guide to opening, rewiring, and closing a high-end IEM such as the UM3X's

So no one knows how to tell which side of a speaker is +/- via multimeter testing? Or if it even matters with BA IEMS?

hey mate, thought I would answer you here, since you have the thread. yes it matters, the entire crossover will not work correctly if polarity is wrong. why dont you do some more googling to see if you can find what type of drivers are used and then look up the datasheet? sorry I cant help with any specific knowledge in this area.

I personally would not attempt it, I think you will have a hard time getting it all back together again, assuming you can get them open without damaging them or at best looking really ghetto. its all glued and snapped together and some of the drivers may not be directly accesible. I would think some specialized tools are needed to get it open. I also do not think that your twag will work with this, the gauge of the wire is too large, you will find that the wires used to connect to the drivers are more like 30-32AWG, then you would need to find some way of adding sufficient strain relief so a accidental tug on the cable will not damage them.

all in all mate, I would just send it in somewhere to get them remolded. the time and risk is not worth it IMO, sorry to be a downer, but wouldnt you kick yourself if you attempted to do this to save some coin and then end up with nothing?

Thanks for the reply. Ultimately, I am going to have these re-molded. I am sending these off tomorrow to Fisher. Can't wait!
