Help me discover new music! Jazz please.

Hey all,

I've had my JH16's for a couple months now, and only until I recently made some adjustments to them have they sounded up to their potential...

I have been listening to mostly Deep House and Underground or Old Hip-Hop, but I want you guys to put me on to some new music so I can exercise these bad boys a little more.

Last night, Jonah Hill put me on to The Mars Volta when he talked about them on Get Him to the Greek.  "Teflon" has me around its finger right now.

I'm actually looking for a jazzy sound, with a deep bass groove, and perhaps some singing.  It usually is slower, and it sounds like it would be played at the waning hours of a night out in a jazz club.  If you could throw some artists out there for me to listen to, I'd appreciate it!

Pardon my ignorance, and thank you

Have you listened to Diana Krall songs?

Worth checking....

Dig is really well-engineered, the songs are good (except for "The Natch") and the performances are great.  And it continues to grow on you over time.  x2 for that recommendation.

I've been listening to a tiny bit of Dig and Diana Krall.  So far, so good!! Thanks for the recommendations!

The thing that got me really interested was I was stumbled across a website, and the opening was a jazz song.

And I finally found it!

Yes, the song is familiar to me, but I like the sound, and would like to know what it's called.  Doing a YouTube search shows me that a couple others have their own rendition of the song.

So where can I get more?

If you like jazz singers, you might want to give Cassandra Wilson a try.  She's a little more hard core jazz than Krall, imo, but a great singer with interesting choices of material.

My favorite two female jazz singers are Keely Smith and Eartha Kitt.  Give either a try - they're great listening.

Given the kind of music you are coming from I think you might like Miles Davis' "In a Silent Way", I'd call it "ambient jazz".  This was Miles dipping his toe into the fusion pool before diving head-first into the deep end with "Bitches Brew".  But where Brew was dense and menacing, Silent Way just floats along in a very ethereal space.  For me it stands as an absolute masterpiece of modern music.

Miles' "Kind of Blue" has more of a "late night at a jazz club" vibe to it, and is IMHO one of the greatest records ever released.  But that is truly jazz and might be a little less accessible to a non-jazz fan than Silent Way.

2x on In A Silent Way…very logical recommendation…
