Questions about Banning users

Thread Starter

I really enjoy Head-Fi and I'm not looking to get Banned, but I do have a question about the Banning practice.  I seem to be noticing that a lot more users have been Banned in the past year.  I always find it interesting when someone gets Banned so I will often search their recent posts to see how much of a jerk they were.

1. Aside from the normal cases of fraud or explicit/vulgar language, what does it take to get Banned here?

2.  Also, if a user was Banned under another name but they rejoin with perfect behavior, should they be banned just because Head-Fi was able to locate their IP or some other method of investigation?

I'm only asking because a couple of users who have contributed to many threads in what I would deem a constructive manner are gone for one of the two reasons mentioned above and I'm sad to see them gone.

What are everyone else's thoughts... assuming I don't get Banned for this thread?

Are we allowed to discuss this issue on Head-Fi??

It appears we have more Mods around here at the moment, which is a plus in my books.

In my opinion, most definitely yes. Moderators do not take to banning individuals lightly.

I've read the TOS, thanks.  It was more of a rhetorical question that I was asking.

However, it is nice to know that banning is not taken lightly.  I only hope that it's done as a committee vote and not a decision made by a sole mod.

I have my own thoughts on re-registering after a Ban.  Your namesake means a lot on a forum.  There are people that I know of by name: DKFT, ClieOS, Towert7, etc.  These are people with a brand name who have contributed to Head-Fi over the years.  If one of them was suddenly Banned, then they would have to join again with a clean slate.  All ownership to their previous contributions lost with a new identity and a new opportunity to play nice with their fellow members.  I equate a Ban to "doing one's time."

Just my $0.02.  I'm done pontificating.

I think that some of the banned names you see in older threads are people who have decided, for whatever reason, to change their account names.

Often times, bans are temporary so you can come back with your same username after you wait it out. I believe only in truly serious cases or repeated offenses are users banned permanently.

kingtz: If you have an admin change your username, all your previous posts will be changed to reflect that.

I have been wondering if Tstarn06 ( Tom) is permanently banned. Very nice person and very helpful and knowledgeable, but for some reason he seemed to get banned constantly. i dunno.

First, we do not discuss bans publically.

Second, the reasons we ban individuals are between the Head-Fi Staff and that member. The Staff is not going to discuss it with anyone. No exceptions.

Bans happen when someone repeatedly breaks the rules. Please note that I said repeatedly. Warnings are given - explicit ones, as well. There isn't any mystery when you get one. When I give one, I try to make clear what happened and I'm willing to discuss it with the member in PMs. What I *don't* want is a bunch of angry members who will either leave or cause trouble. That doesn't help anyone.

If you ignore the warning and continue to break the rules, you will be banned.

The Staff is not going to babysit people who contribute valuable content sometimes and fly off the handle other times. It is unfortunate that some valuable people cannot reign in their emotions, but they are responsible for what they post. Our job is to keep discussions on point and not sink into a cesspool of personal insults. If that were allowed, it would kill the forums. And anyone wanting to sling mud has plenty of opportunity to do it somewhere else on the Internet.

Bans are discussed privately before given. Moderators and Administrators discuss issues privately and a consensus is reached. Save for spammers, of course, who get nuked on sight. If I see a 200 line post with Nike jerseys and $299 iPads, etc. that person is toast and I'm not going to bother asking around.

Offensive posts are always removed. You won't see them if you check the histories. The Staff retains them, however, for our reference.

It is not permissable to re-register under a different name. The TOS is clear. If you do this, you will be banned again.

I am going to lock this thread, but I will leave it up. We don't publically discuss bans, but I want you to see my response. If anyone has questions, feel free to PM me or another member of the Staff.
